In the 1901 census, Sophie's birthplace was reported to be 'Alnhat'. That is clearly an awful rendering of Anhalt, referring to the Duchy (Herzogtum) of Anhalt, which had been created in 1863 from 3 smaller duchies.

Amongst the 222 missing or wounded from Jonitz during WWI, there was a Gustav Bräsecke.

Blimey, the Queen has died ...

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you Justin.  Thank you ever so much for your posts.  I will work my way through your info and recommendations and see what comes up.

It's a very sad time.  I was hoping that she would outlast Charles.

Sent an email (in my attempt at German and also in English) off a couple of weeks ago to the Dessau-Roßlau Registry office and no reply yet.  ???  Am I likely to expect anything from them now?  Does anyone have any experience with them?

Never had much look with German research and would still be interested if anyone knows of anyone on the ground in the area who may be able to assist.

I'm still looking!  ::)

I think you're unlikely to find anyone here who has dealt with that particular Standesamt.

I can well imagine that it is understaffed, and those few staff are busy registering current events. I wouldn't give up hope yet.
