Interpretation of Corps of Royal Engineer's Unit

220969 T/Major F O C Hodges on his return to the UK on 20 Aug 1946 from Burma theatre gave his UK unit as 424 (QVOM) Ind Fd Coy R.IE.

In addition, on original embarkation in Burma on 31 Jan 1946, according to the promotions page of his Officer's Record of Service, he served with "CRE 4 Corps Tps Engrs," I always assumed that REME provided transport/vehicle engineers to the British Army.

Grateful for any enlightenment on the above please.

Transport is usually abbreviated to tpt, or more often MT (motor transport). A Royal Engineer (a Sapper) would be most offended if someone suggested he was in the REME!

Heaven's forbid, even as a Crab I know the difference between the RE and the REME.
