Thank you fiddlerslass - attached is an image of the man you have identified. He features in a number of photographs leading up to 1943. I am not sure what the comments read on the photo but either way I am very grateful for the help as the language barrier with the records has made it very difficult.

That's a good photo. Yes, I agree it says Nikolsburg. They could be up on the Turold hill, which is part of a geopark with caves.Did you notice there was an older brother Franz on the census, who was also of an age to fight? Perhaps he is the other man up on the hill.

I don't speak Czech and my German is not brilliant, but I have a bit of experience with Czech archives although my ancestry is more from northern Bohemia. Let me know if you need any more help.

the word on the left reads Nikolsberg not Nikolsburg
the word on the right reads Burg, see the stroke above the U

So the photo was taken on the Nikolsberg in Nikolsburg

The photograph of the three people in Mikulov was taken from the area adjacent to the Kozi Hrader looking towards the Church of St Wenceslas.
