German records for WW2 soldier Killed in Action 1943 - Johann STADLER
« on: Monday 05 September 22 00:23 BST (UK) »
I am hoping for some assistance to try and find a record of a German soldier killed in action in 1943 to help an associates with their family history .

All I know is that his name was Johann (Hans) STADLER. STADLER was said to be born on 6 December 1918 in Austria and was from the  Guttenbrunn. He joined the Wehrmacht early in WW2. He is said to have won the Iron Cross before being killed on the Eastern Front (Russia) in 1943. He had one son in 1941.

I have tried Ancestry however the records are in German and blanked out as I don't have the German subscription (nor can I read German).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

All the best

Digital records for Mikulov, don't seem to go as late as 1918 on births, but if you find his parents names would be worth a go. You could try looking for a possible earlier sibling, I suppose.

Thank you Fiddlerslass for the cemetery link. That answered a number of my questions.

In regards to Stariza H.V.Pl. Sanko. 2/293 do you have any idea what the HVPI Sanko 2/293 refers to? is that a military hospital or similar?

Once again many thanks for your assistance - I didn't think I would get this far

Heeresverbandplatz is army Field dressing station.

I had a look at the records on Ancestry and it gave Johann's wife as Maria and an address in Vienna Wien district 111, Hetzgasse 22/24, his millitary unit was 1 gren  regt 510 and it unfortunately looks like he was shot through the head. Also there was an alternative name as Hans  in brackets, with Johann added in a different hand, so perhaps he was Hans Johann or variations thereof.

There is a joint German Russian initiative to digitise records held in Russian archives, you may be able to find something about what was happening around the date he died . It will be in German or Russian, but there could be something like a war diary.

Finally managed to find the 1921 census for Mikulov online. Not indexed, and there's no guarantee your man was still there, but worth plodding through if you have the time!
