John Matthew METCALF (senior) born about 1878 Allendale Northumberland.
His parents Richard METCALF (aka CURREY) and Elizabeth VARTY.

In 1911census, John Matthew METCALF is living with his Brother in Law, Edward BELL, wife of Mary Elizabeth nee Metcalf
So even though his wife says she was a widow in 1911, that does not seem to be true.
I think that might be a death for him in 1953 Newcastle, age 76. Probate to Richard Metcalf.

Neale, I'm guessing you probably meant death was 1953 Newcastle (not Durham) as mentioned by Rosie in reply 2.
A likely cemetery if he was interred would be Elswick Cemetery.

I think that might be a death for him in 1953 Newcastle, age 76. Probate to Richard Metcalf.

The Probate Calendar gives the date of death as 15th November, place of death 416 Westgate Road (the General Hospital).

Which leads to this Newcastle Evening Chronicle 17th November 1953 death announcement,  :

Metcalfe, Benwell 102 Gill Street, November 15th at General Hospital, aged 76 years, John Matthew, husband of the late Margaret. Private cremation.

In 1939 Newcastle Upon Tyne, John Matthew Metcalf, born 5 Dec 1906 (married) a general labourer, is with his mother Margaret Elizabeth Metcalf born 16 Mar 1874.

They were living at 102 Gill Street - same address as in the death announcement.
