Headstone Pictures Avondale Parish Burial Ground Strathaven
« on: Friday 02 September 22 22:29 BST (UK) »
I have photographs of the following stones, taken August 2022. Generally speaking the names are listed male + female couples but with exceptions, usually siblings instead of a wife.
Occasionally I have included a place name within the parish, also an occupation and, when a date appears, it indicates the earliest date on that stone or sometimes it is the only date.
These are only a small percentage of the stones in the burial ground. It is very easy to find, directly opposite Strathaven castle, it is well kept and the parking is good. Situated on a steep slope.

That's a very kind offer Lodger.
I would certainly like to see the 'COCHRAN, HAMILTON & MAIR' one.
I'm not sure if it would be my direct ancestor, but my Cochrans certainly married Hamilton and Mair girls in Avondale.
My 5 x great grandfather Alexander Cochran is supposed buried there in 1804 according to a family bible, but I have never been able to find a burial entry for him or a grave ................

Thanks very much

Hi Goldie61, there are plenty of Cochran's (plenty of spellings too!) but the only reference to an Alexander who would be a contemporary of yours, is an entry in the mortcloth payment register for "Alexander Cochran's child, Allanton, 14th March 1781".
If you can't manage to read the inscriptions let me know.

Hi Rodeo, I've sent 2 pictures, the actual stone has fallen over and lies behind the plinth, shown in the 2nd picture. It's a good-sized plot. If you can't read the inscription let me know and I'll transcribe it.

Hi Lodger

Thank you so much for the photo of the Tennent and Paterson headstone. They are indeed my relations. However, I'm unable to read the monumental inscription. I apologise for further imposing on your generosity but could you please post the transcription?

Many thanks, Lodger.

All the best,

Rodeo

No problem Rodeo.

"1914. Erected to the memory of James Tennent, Boot & Shoe Merchant, Strathaven, who died 7th July 1897 in his 77th year. Janet Paterson his spouse who died 21st May 1876 in her 64th year.
And of their children. Agnes Tennent, who died 21st October 1902 in her 58th year. Eliza Tennent who died 20th January 1913 in her 69th year. And Gavin Paterson Tennent (M.D.?) Glasgow, who died 13th September 1913 in his 68th year".

I'm not too sure about the letters after Gavin's name.

Hi Lodger

Thank you so much for the transcription. Yes, the letters after the name of Gavin Paterson Tennent would indeed be M.D. given that that he was a physician who, upon his death, bequeathed his entire estate to The University of Glasgow Faculty of Medicine, the Western Infirmary, the Royal Infirmary, the Victoria Infirmary and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow. As he resided in Glasgow, I assumed he had been interred in a cemetery there.

Many thanks again, Lodger. Your kindness in posting this is greatly appreciated.

All the very best,

Rodeo

Thanks for the photo of the Cochrans Lodger.
The inscriptions are very difficult to make out - especially the stone on the left.
They pixelate very quickly when you try and zoom in.
Because there is a limit to the size you can post on Rootschat, if I send my email address on a PM might you be able to send me a bigger file photo?
Thanks very  much
