Birth of Ethel Maud Smith c1893
« on: Thursday 25 August 22 12:01 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am looking for some assistance in locating the birth details for Ethel Maud Smith, presumably daughter of John Thomas Burrows Smith and Annie Sebastin / Sebastian. I have located records for siblings.  I have death and cemetery records.
Married Herbert Mayfield in 1929 in PORT PIRIE SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
According to Mayfield's obit he was born in Nottingham ENG c1896. Help with this would also be appreciated.
Thanks LW

What reason do you have to believe theses are parents of Ethel Maud SMITH?

" presumably daughter of John Thomas Burrows Smith and Annie Sebastin / Sebastian"

Can you please list all the information on the marriage certificate, 1929.

Married 12 Sep 1929 Methodist Manse Port Pirie
Groom  Age 33  Bride Age 36
Groom father: Herbert Mayfield
Bride father: John Thomas Burrow Smith

John Thomas B Smith married Anne Sebastin 14 Aug 1881 at St Ignatius Church Norwood

I mentioned presumably as my family history in Port Pirie has included irregular family adoptions and fostering from that early 1900s to 1950s as birth parents died.

Thanks LW

Thank you Debra

I had checked but missed it terribly.  Broken Hill is a usual go to when looking for Pirie people.

It ties in with her sister Ellen Annie's marriage to Charles Andrew Burke in Kadina.

First sibling died at 4 months.

Thank you again.

Your Herbert MAYFIELD who died in Sth Australia was in the merchant navy from the age of about 13 years. This explains why he is not found on the 1911 English census.
His seaman’s identification number was 716085.
He earned medals during WW1 which were sent to him in Adelaide. His medal card is available for free download from the UK archives. His d.o.b on the card is incorrect (1893)
Herbert was on a crew list for the “TREFUSIS” arriving New York Aug 1925. He was onboard this ship when he arrived in South Australia in late November 1925.
He was admitted to Royal Adelaide hospital 25 May 1952 and discharged 28 days later. TB is recorded beside his name.  He died Nov 22 1952 at Port Pirie Hospital.

Your Herbert’s mother was Elizabeth RANYARD born about 1864 Hull. Elizabeth (Ranyard) MAYFIELD died in Grimsby on 14 Sept 1923

In 1884 Lincoln, Elizabeth married John Thomas MAYFIELD ( a railway pointsman and shunter)
Elizabeth and John had five children: John William; Charles Edward; Eliza Annie; Samuel; Alice.

Her husband John MAYFIELD died on 27 Apr 1889 in Derby in a railway accident.

Elizabeth then went on to have three more children: Mary Ann 1894, Herbert 1896 and George 1899.
The question is who was the father of these children?
There is a birth cert for Mary Ann born 1894 in the workhouse – and no father named. I cannot see birth records for either of the two boys under the surname MAYFIELD.

In 1891 the family is in Derby
Elizabeth MAYFIELD widow 27 charwoman born Hull
William son 8 born Market Rasen, Lincs
Charles son 6 born Derby
Annie daughter 4 born Derby
Samuel son 2 born Derby
Alice  daughter 8 months born Derby

In 1901 census the family is in Great Grimsby Lincolnshire
Elizabeth MAYFIELD widow 40 charwoman born Hull Yorkshire
Annie daughter 14 born Derby
Samuel son 12 born Derby
Alice daughter 10 born Derby
Herbert son 5 born Nottingham
George son 2 born Grimsby

In 1911 census Elizabeth Mayfield is in the workhouse in Great Grimsby.

Looking for a possibly father:
There is a Herbert MAYFIELD born 1872 Long Eaton Derbyshire, who was in the mercantile Marine and died (drowned) in 1919 from the steam trawler “Theban”.

He married Lottie Harriet SMEDLEY in 1898 Basford Nottingham, and Lottie Harriet MAYFIELD died April 1899 age 19.

In 1901 census he is living in Nottingham age 28 a widower, living with his father George MAYFIELD.

In 1907 Nottingham Herbert re-married Nellie CORBETT.
After that, he and wife Nellie are living in Grimsby.

Thank you for all that very interesting information.

When Herbert married in 1929, he named his father as Herbert William.
His only son was named William Herbert.

As was common during these times, age at marriage was a fluid concept (my gg grandmother's was incorrect on all 4 of her marriage certs), but your information ties in neatly with 1896 being true as stated , rather than the 1893 on the mercantile record.

A quick look in South Australian records did not indicate that his siblings joined him here at all.

I appreciate the time that you took to look into that.  All the best Little
