Hi

Does anyone with local Musselburgh knowledge recognise this name - 9 (something) Square? I found something which suggests it might be Millkill, but just looking to see if anyone can confirm.

You give no indication of the date or what kind of record snippet this is.  Would you be able to find it on a census record using what I assume is the name attached to the record.

It's a 1902 death record. I don't have a subscription with any site just now. These are records I got from Scotland's People which I'm just now getting round to looking at.

More likely Mill Hill Square rather than 'kill.

What is the name of your relative that died there in 1902?

There are certainly still  various Millhill  addresses  in Musselburgh on modern maps.

1901 shows as James MacDonald, retired baker, with his family at 9 Mill Hill Square.

Thank you. I agree Millhill seems more likely. The reason I thought Millkill is because it is mentioned in this document which I found after a quick Google - https://archive.org/stream/edinburghcounty187071dir/edinburghcounty187071dir_djvu.txt.

MonicaL - My relative's name was Georgina McDonald nee McIntosh and James McDonald was indeed her husband, who was a baker.

I would not be relying on the spelling in the document you have linked to as this as been 'translated' using an optical character (OCR) by the looks.  This scans and reads and needs human interpretation much of the time. 

If you are searching in Australia there is a wonderful resource there called Trove  - OCR of the newspapers and these have to be read by humans to make sense of what the machine has seen.
