Date these?

I'm not looking for restoration, although it would be nice. I'm more interested in finding out when these were taken. One, I believe, is a tin type.  :o

Hi Tariana,

I'm most taken by the lady in the first photo, I think it must be 1870's ish.
Points to note for discussion, are the bow around the neck.  It is heavily starched
and she holds a bible in her hands but it's upside down, my elderly Mom says
says it's 'cos of quickness for the photograph, which may be correct because
she has good nails...........doesn't work on the farm.  We thought it might
have been taken in the US 'cos of the style of the pose?

I'm not sure she's holding the bible upside down - I think she's left handed!

 ;D

The images on tintypes are laterally reversed - that is to say, they are a mirror image!  So she was holding the bible the right way, although if she'd wanted the picture to show that, she should have held it the wrong way   ???

Trust that made as much sense to you as it did to me!

P.S.  Tarriana, I will have a look at your photos properly when I get to work, where I can dig out some reference material.  I'm sure we can narrow down some dates for you.  :)

...as she is mirror image, is the first lady then wearing a large ring on her left ring finger?  Could be a marriage or engagement picture?  As for a date, I would go along with 1870s, probably the first half of that decade, and I agree that it is probably American, but not certain about that.

And after saying that she's holding the book the right way around, I have to say I was wrong about that.  If the image is laterally reversed, then she is holding the spine in her right hand, and the top with her left.  I think I must have confused myself...time for a lie down!   ???
