William Ruddock

Hi all. Looking for a bit of help on this man, his name is William Ruddock. Last name has also been down as Ruddocks, Reddick(s) or Riddick(s).

Died February 26th 1876 in Annbank, death cert says he was 98 years old but I think this is a stretch. I think he was most likely early in his early nineties. He was born in Ireland, and according to his death cert and his daughters marriage certificate he was married to an Ann Jess/Jefs. Ann is listed as living when her daughter Grace got married in 1858, but is deceased by the time William died in 1876.

William and Ann had 4 children that I know of
Hugh (1811-1867)
Alexander (1818-?)
Jane (1822-1909)
John (1823-?)
Samuel (1827-1863)
Grace (1834-1919)

Some trees say that Ann was born in 1803 and died 1850, but they have little to no sources, and even if she was born in 1803 I highly doubt she gave birth to Hugh at 8 years old.
The only record I seem to have found of Ann is her listed as the mother on her son, Alexanders baptism in Ireland, and her other son, John's baptism in 1823.

Graces 1919 death cert says parents are William Reddick and Annie Campbell. Maybe Grace is actually old Williams granddaughter, and William had a son called William who also married an Annie?

Scotlands People has several Reddox deaths in Ayrshire between 1841-1851.  Mainly children but there is an entry 29.12.1849 for a 64yr old female but no christian name

Neither the 1841 or 1851 has any entries for that surname

EDIT - sorry - just realised Ann was only 45 in 1841 so cannot be her

I dont type up the whole census anymore as I have found in recent years people seem to have more access.

I know the feeling Trish. The strange thing on this family is the 1841 census states all children born Ayrshire but the ones still with their father in 1851 state Ireland. I do not see any baptisms for the name in Ayrshire on SP.

Hi all, thanks so far for these censuses and marriages etc

So if those are correct, I would assume William was actually born around the turn of the century, but perhaps in later years his age was exaggerated, and as his actual age increased, as did his 'fake age', until he was well into his 90s. So perhaps on his 1876 death cert he was actually aged around 75-85?
Although, there is still his older children, in particular, Hugh who's year of birth puzzles me. It may be worth noting, that William had a brother called John, John died in 1868 aged 84. Maybe the brothers have been muddled up?

Edit: Hugh's 1867 death cert says father William Ruddock is still alive, and mother Anne (maiden name not listed) is deceased.

2nd edit: Samuel's death cert in 1863, father William is still alive and mother Anne Jefs is deceased.
