Archives NZ searching
« on: Tuesday 09 August 22 02:28 BST (UK) »
Hi. I want to search the surname "Barrie". I get some 7,500 results because it automatically gives me alternative spellings which means I get every Barry, including the christian name Barry. I've tried putting Barrie in quote marks but that makes no difference. Has anyone worked out a way to outsmart this aspect of the search facility?
regards
John

Hi John,

Have you tried the Advanced Search option? The link appears once the basic search field loads up.

Click on that and enter the name.

Advanced Search opens with one search condition in the left-hand box. Select 'name' from the drop down list in this box, and enter. to add search parameters click on 'Add Condition' and from the new drop down list on the left select 'start year' and put the year in the right-hand box.

Click 'Add Condition' again and this time select 'end year'.

Let me know if this helps.

Regards,

Spades

Hi Spades
I did as you suggested. Opened Advanced Search. "Name" is the default entry in Field. "Contains" is the default entry in Rule. So all I had to do was type "Barrie" in the Value box. Hit Search. Still the same amount of results however, so no progress.

Did discover something new (obvious though). When the results load, I now change the way results are viewed - from Grid View to List View. It means the whole Title of each result is now instantly viewable. In Grid View longer Titles can only partially be seen, and I was having to open each result to view the full Title - Doh.

I also used the Find option [Control F] to quickly find "Barrie" among the results, but as the results only load 12 at a time, that doesn't speed things up much either.
