Going to dive a little deeper with this one..

There's a William Eden buried at the Baptist Church in Hook Norton aged 88. This is not the correct William Eden (there are multiple in the same area..). Present at William's death is his daughter Elizabeth Luckett (nee Eden) who married Reuben Luckett in 1869 aged 20. She's 2 in 1851 living with William and Elizabeth Eden.. born Hook Norton, still living in Hook Norton for the 1911 census.

William's daughter Hannah married James Harrison in 1866, William is not listed as deceased.

William's son Joseph married Catherine Smith in 1873, William is not listed as deceased.

Might do some general searches on the censuses to check out if he absconded as others have suggested.

------

There's a William Eden in nearby Shenington, Oxfordshire in 1861 census but not likely a match. Seems to appear with brother John on 1851 in Shenington, born Tysoe(?). Buried Shenington 1875.

There's a "William Eydon" baptised 11 March 1810 in Milcombe, to Robert and Mary. Milcombe is only 3 miles from Barford St. Michael (listed as birthplace in 1851 census). He also had a brother Thomas who was born in 1816. Robert (father) appears to have been an Agricultural Labourer (listed in 1851 census under his wife "Pauper, Ag Lab Widow", the same as William (as listed in the 1851 census).

this is ringing a bell!  Isn't there an article about this family and emigration (to USA?) in the Oxfordshire Family History Society magazine a few years back?
