Possible death of Elizabeth?

1896 Q3 Death - Betsey Goodman; age 50 (born c1846); Whitechapel; 01C; 229

EDIT: Ignore this, I think this one is likely the wife of Marks Goodman, both born Russia.

Thank you all so much! I am so grateful and overwhelmed at these responses. It’s very exciting so I will go through all records you have shared properly today.

Some background…

I knew about Elizabeth Harrington through recently purchasing Catherine (my G grandmother’s birth certificate) and it had Elizabeth Harrington and James Goodman as parents. I have quite a lot of records on her. She married a German protestant in Birmingham but they baptised their kids in a Catholic Church up there.

The issue is going beyond Elizabeth and James, I am struggling to find records of them and their parentage. I reckon they married in Ireland and came over during the famine and Irish records have been tricky. Plus there are so many with the same names so it’s hard to know who are the right ones.

Jonw65 - Yes, I believe those are the children and I have those records (Catherine, Maryann and James Goodman). I had not seen that infirmary record but that would make sense. I have noticed records for both mother Elizabeth and James living separately stating they are widowed on forms, so perhaps he deserted them and that’s why they both just put widowed. Even the daughter Catherine put on her marriage record that her father James was deceased, but I saw a record recently that seemed like him alive at the time (he was living in the area and a retired dock worker - living in a union workhouse). I saw a comment saying they may not have been married at all which could have been the case!

I hadn’t seen those family search records before so will look at those today.  :)

This is interesting, thanks. Catherine who married in 1899 had put him as deceased on her marriage cert.

I had suspected this might have been him in the 1911 census:

I reckon they married in Ireland and came over during the famine and Irish records have been tricky.

Elizabeth was born in Shoreditch so that seems unlikely.

Did Catherine give an occupation for her father when she married or is it just 'deceased'?  What is James' occupation on Catherine's birth cert?

Debra  :)

Ah yes true.

Her marriage cert says he was a gas fitter (James Goodman). There is another record for a Catherine in 1891 at 5 Crossland Sq Bethnal Green with James Goodman father, a widowed bell hanger who was born in St Olaves. Apparently bell hangers and gas fitter was a crossover occupation so I thought this could be him, but not sure! It also has sister Mary Ann on it, aged 15 born at St Georges in the East.

But on the '81 census it has them living with the mother who has also put widowed. It's very confusing.

Seems as if Elizabeth and James weren’t properly married :-\ perhaps it would be worth researching if one of them was already married to someone else and they were also separated? maybe you could also check parish minute books to see if James had to pay any fine for having illegitimate children/deserting them.
