Hospital records Morningside, Edinburgh
« on: Friday 01 July 22 14:22 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth Campbell Lyon born 1st August 1888 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow
I believe she had a serious accident as a child, she appears with family in 1891 Census and then disappears, I tried searching 1901 and 1911 records without success. And no death record My mother believed she visited this lady in the 1940’s at some kind of care home in the morningside area of Edinburgh. Are there any research areas I can try to find a child through to adulthood and death who would require medical care?

Any help will be very much appreciated. Thank you

What leads you to believe she had a serious accident?

Who were her parents?

1911 Census 644/15 25/ 10 has her parents, John 59 and Elizabeth 57 and siblings, Marion 33, Andrew 26  at 77 Florence Street Glasgow.  Elizabeth 20 is a Football Sewer.      Married 35 yrs, 10 children of whom 5 are alive.

My mum was told she had an accident on a swing as a small child!?

Her parents were Elizabeth Campbell 1865-1955 and John Lyon 1867-1920
Siblings were Hugh, William, John, Robert, Jane, James and Charles. I cannot find her after 1891 census nor a death record 😕

Thank you CaroleW for your kind interest

Thank you for your interest and reply this is however the wrong family, in 1911 my family were in Oswald Street, Calton, Glasgow. Parents were 10 years younger than above family and married for 22 yrs 12 children 7 alive, 6 shown on census but not daughter Elizabeth.

Sad story. Poor little Elizabeth  :-\

She died in 1961 at this hospital https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herdmanflat_Hospital

She died from a cororany thrombosis, aged 72. One of her brothers reported her death. James maybe from the names you mention for her sibings. See below.

Like you, struggling to see her so far in 1901.

If your mother remembers visiting her in Morningside it may have been The Royal Edinburgh which was then and still is now a psychiatric hospital.

The hospital Monica linked to was the same.

I had a relative who died there aged 20 in 1936. I was able to call up and look at this medical notes as it was over 75 years since he had died.

Reading them now I realise he died of sepsis but at the time it was obviously thought he had a delusional mental illness.

I count my blessings for antibiotics!

Appreciate your interest and reply, yes it was Morningside that my mum remembered visiting, it would be interesting to read her notes, however if I have to wait until 75th anniversary of her death I will also be 75😕 she died the year I was born. I think she was institutionalised at a young age which is why finding her on 1901 and 1911 census proving difficult, but to survive until she was 72 she was well looked after or a very strong lady.
