Hi,

My partner's late father was Charles Josef Vincent, b.1931 in Bandung, East Java, Indonesia and who died on 28 March 1992 in Enschede in the Netherlands. His parents were Johan Christiaan Vincent (1896-1939) and Emilia Wilhelmina Snitker (1902-1978). We are having real difficulty finding any records relating to Charles or his ancestors, even via Ancestry and FamilySearch.

Any help, advice, or recommendations for sites to check would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon.

I'm not a specialist re the Netherlands Indies, but here a few suggestions:

Life would have been a lot easier if you were looking for Dutch records  ... e.g. the death certificates of 2 of Johan Christiaan VINCENT's uncles are easily available:
1954 death of Frederik Leonard VINCENT in Haarlem: https://nha.blob.core.windows.net/scans/BS%20Overlijden/Haarlem/1954/NL-HlmNHA_O_HAA_1954_0072.jpg
1964 death of Jan Alphons VINCENT in Den Haag: https://hdl.handle.net/21.12124/1E130D25C8DF455BA99D2626FDF0BBCE (FYI only - His NI public service record: https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/archief/2.10.36.21/invnr/44/file/NL-HaNA_2.10.36.21_44_0289)

Nevertheless here are some NI sources in the case of Johan Christian:

Johan Christiaan VINCENT birth (and acknowledgement?) abt 1897 Demboel (Madioen), d 1 Nov 1939 Djokjakarta
- son of Joannus Christianus Cornelis VINCENT (d 1917 Madioen) & Klem(m)oek (no surname)
(I assume that Klemoek would have been a native woman)
- NI DC (needs FHC visit): Film#1357869, cert#60 – see:
   https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/297970?availability=Family%20History%20Library
- NI Public service record:
https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/archief/2.10.36.21/invnr/13/file/NL-HaNA_2.10.36.21_13_0350 (NB the abbreviation SS is mentioned, nothing to do with WW2, but I suspect that SS = Staats Spoorwegen i.e. National railways)
- 1925 engagement: E.W SNITKER and J.C VINCENT in Madioen: https://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=ddd:010277976:mpeg21:a0105

Just a final note:
From (at least?) 1903 there is a “Vincent, J. Ch. C – Gep. Klerk – Madioen” in the “Adresboek Nederlandsch-Indie’.  These address books tend to have the wife’s name between brackets on the same line. As this is not the case for Johan and because his partner seems to have been a native woman,  I believe that his children might not have had an official birth registration with the surname VINCENT but they might have had an ”Erkenning” (=acknowledgement) by their dad at some stage. I don’t know enough re this topic, but it is something to keep in mind.

Hi TreeSprit,

Thanks so much, that's incredibly helpful. As you say, Indonesian records are far more elusive! Hi however, your advice and links have led to other success which is great. Thanks so much!

Best wishes,
Jon
