R.F.A Farrier Sergeant Lucas
« on: Tuesday 14 June 22 12:12 BST (UK) »
I'm researching the life of George David Lucas who was the son of a sergeant in the 10th Hussars. From researching his discharge & pension records i have found that he was a Farrier sergeant in Battery A, C Brigade Royal Field Artillery but unlike other records their is no list of his postings. His record does show he served for 22 years and 211 days before leaving the army in Canterbury to become a publican. Part of his service was 3 years and 9 months in India the rest spent in Britain. From his census records and birth records of his children i know that he joined the army at Kingston in 1842 from the East Middlesex Militia. Was in Woolwich in 1862, Dorchester Barracks as a shoeing smith in 1865, was based in Newbridge, Ireland in Ireland in 1868, a shoeing smith RHA at Woolwich barracks 1871, and finally Canterbury in 1877.  I'm trying to fill in the gaps regarding his service especially when and where he was in India. From the RFA history his Battery and Brigade seem to have been the Bengal Horse Artillery before amalgamation but he only spent a short time in India (cant find a census record 1861). Any suggestions on where to look for more details information on his career ? Thanks

He joined the militia in 1852 and was released to enlist in the Royal Artillery in 1854. This would be British Army, not the Bengal Army of the HEIC.

There's a page missing from the images on FindMyPast. You can see that it has some details of his service - this would probably be units and ranks:

I haven't checked the Fold3 images https://www.fold3.com/image/585782152?xid=1022
