Colley’s Droitwich workhouse 1871
« on: Monday 13 June 22 20:43 BST (UK) »
I have been looking into the Colley’s in the Droitwich workhouse in 1871 there is an Eliza Colley who is the mother and her children are Lucy Colley age 8, Sarah Colley age 1, and Alice Colley aged 4 there is also another Sarah A Colley aged 3. What I am trying to work out is if Sarah A is one of her children in 1881 Sarah A Colley is the only one in the workhouse the others have left. I know that at Southwell workhouse which was the first in the country if a member of a family left all the family had to leave I don’t know if this rule applied to all workhouses. Also I can’t find a birth for a Sarah A Colley around the time she would have been born. I can find Eliz Colley in the 1881 Census living in Kidderminster her second name is now Turner her daughter Lucy Colley is with her but Sarah is no longer there I am still trying to find her. If anybody else is researching this family I would welcome you thoughts on Sarah A Colley. Thank you. Bernard

In 1861 census there are two Eliza Colleys living in Tibberton.
Both have several children.
The births below match to:
William Colley and Eliza Hooper married in 1847

GRO births
Droitwich

1862 Lucy Colley mmn Hooper
1865 Charlotte Colley mmn Hooper  - also a death 1865
1869 Sarah Colley mmn Hooper

Did the same exercise as heywood with regard to Colley/Hooper children. One further one.

COLLEY, WILLIAM       HOOPER
GRO Reference: 1867  D Quarter in DROITWICH  Volume 06C  Page 358

COLLEY, WILLIAM       aged 0
GRO Reference: 1868  M Quarter in DROITWICH  Volume 06C  Page 209

That does not really allow (I think!) time in pregnancies for Sarah A to be Elizabeth's daughter.

Sarah A Colley appears in 1891 ref 2321 74A 9

Believe Sarah Ann E Colley marries James Fletcher JQ 1896 Droitwich

1901 census 2794 174 6 (surname HTCHER on Anc*)  no children

1911 census 17753  15  no children  married 13 years

The marriage cert for 1896 may indicate father of Sarah!

Sarah Ann Elizabeth Fletcher with James in 1921. Parish North Claines, Droitwich

Just a thought. on the 1861 census living with William & Elizabeth is a daughter Hannah born c1849.
Could she have married and had a daughter Sarah Ann c1868 and is then recorded as Daughter of Elizabeth instead of grand daughter in 1871?

Thanks for your help. The Eliza Colley I am looking into at Tibberton is the one married to William Colley in 1861. William died in 1867 which lead to Eliza being in the workhouse in 1871 this is where a found Sara A Colley and it is the only census she appears on with Eliza and her family. I am beginning to think she is not related to Elizabeth it gives her berth as 1868 in Droitwich but I can not find a birth in Droitwich around that time. I do tend to think the birth date will be reasonably accurate  as she is show at age 3 which being filled out at the work house I can’t see them being a long way out she is then shown at the workhouse ten years later age 13 I have then found a Sarah Ann ten years later as a domestic servant age 23 so all the years seem to tally. I did find the Sarah Ann that married James Fletcher but I am being to think she is not related to Eliza Colley nee Hopper. I don,t think it will be her daughters child she went on to marry a Thomas Dowdeswell in 1869 and had plenty of children of her own.
