Shoemakers at Whitehaven, David Skillen and John McMullan/McMillin
« on: Monday 13 June 22 19:19 BST (UK) »
Greetings!!   I now have serious vision issues, so am unable to do a lot of searches now. My GG Grandfather was John McMullan a shoemaker. I found he and David Skillen were both shoemakers and likely friends (perhaps related?) at Downpatrick. David's wife was Grace. David was at Whitehaven on the 1851 census, but his wife showed as Rose? (I believe my John had a sister Rose McMullan, but she married a John Skilen at Downpatrick?). I thought Rose may have been helping David in 1851, but not sure where Grace was? Later census at Whitehaven show David a shoemaker with wife Grace. In 1861 David shows as a master shoemaker at Quay Street. There is an 1861 census at Whitehaven for a John McMillin shows as born abt 1819, is Irish, master shoemaker on Quay Street also, spouse Catherine. My John McMullan was married to Margaret Orr at Downaptrick in 1844, and John was shown as John Mullen, shoemaker at Hull, Quebec on the Canada 1852 census. Margaret had a son, David at Kingston, Ontario about 1853, but not sure who David's father was for sure. By 1861 John McMullan's wife Margaret had remarried to a John Hinds and they were at Toronto. I haven't found my John McMullan's fate after 1852 in Canada? I only see the John McMillin on the 1861 census at Whitehaven, and not sure of his status before or after 1861? I don't know who Catherine his spouse was, or where they married? I do have a DNA match for a person that has a Skillen on their family tree, an Ethel Skillen born abt 1886 at Whitehaven who married a Ralph Whittle, but can't be sure what name I match for? I think her parents may have been a William Skillen and perhaps a Sarah. I'm hoping to find out more about the John McMillin shown on the 1861 census at Whitehaven if at all possible. (Note: there was another different John McMullen with a spouse Catherine in the Cumberland, England area also, but I think was a laborer so not the same John.)  Any thoughts or help appreciated very much!!  Thanks so much!!  Tom McMillan (State of Washington, USA)

There's a Facebook group with many tales of the exploits of the SKILLENs of Whitehaven in the late 1800s.

Three present-day SKILLENs are group members too.

Thanks!!  I had joined a group called Whitehaven now and then a few months ago and posted my query there then. I only see one Skillen in that group. I've reached out to another at ancestry who was said to be part of the group but haven't heard back.  That link doesn't work, could you tell me the name of the Facebook Group you're referring to??

Thanks!!  Tom

It's "It happened in Whitehaven" https://www.facebook.com/groups/137047633654659

I searched the group for Skillen references.

You have to be a member of the group to see anything.

I'm not sure of the present status of the group, it's been inactive for 5 months following this post -

I think that fb page interest in old reports about Whitehaven, and long-dead inhabitants that once dominated 100+ year old newspapers , has dramatically waned. Membership increased, but engagement did not. I had contemplated compiling a couple of books about some of the pieces I did not share on the page, and of the notorious Skillen family, but there really isn't a place in town to sell them and not sure the interest is there after all. Being in Canada makes it tricky to distribute them too.
I had a lot of fun, met some great people, laughed, cried, shook my head in disbelief, was entertained, put the kettle on numerous times, ate biscuits and tried to offer something different.
Everything, and I mean everything, has a life cycle ❤
Over. And Out. Amanda

I'll contact Amanda and point her to your post here. :)

I can't help, but found the post interesting because I have a group of DNA matches on Ancestry who all descend from a McMullen in County Down. My ancestors were James Breen and Ellen McIlheron who came from Kilclief and thereabouts and moved from Whitehaven after their marriage, to Workington. There are James Breens on both sides of Strangford Lough who are related to each other, but where McMullen fits into my tree I don't know.
