1841 Oldham/Crompton (Lancashire) Brierley
« on: Sunday 04 September 05 21:32 BST (UK) »
Seeking  James Brierley (born 3 Aug 1791 in Crompton) and his wife Elizabeth Henthorn Brierley (born 11 June 1792); and their son James Brierley (born 5 June 1819 in Crompton) and his wife Hannah Barrett [Barrott](born 9 Nov 1818 in Butterworth Hall). The younger James and Hannah were married 12 January 1840 at St. Mary's Oldham, and emigrated to Massachusetts USA sometime in the next two years. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to Rootschat.

You do not say where you got the information regarding the birth 3 Aug 1791 for James Brierley. Do you mean baptism? Did you find this on a parish record. If so, you should have the parents names.

I looked on the IGI Familysearch and the nearest I could find  baptism  15 JAN 1792 Saint Mary, Oldham, Parents:
Father:     JOSEPH BRIERLEY
Mother:     ANN

hope this helps

Thanks for the response. Actually what I need is a lookup for these folks in the 1841 census. If they're there then that narrows the emigration date because they had a child born in Massachusetts in 1842. If they aren't in the 1841 census that opens the window a little further. Can you help with the census lookup?

Did you get a lead on your James Brierley? If he wasn't baptised until the Spring following his birth in August  (which wasn't uncommon) he could be the son of Samuel (a Weaver) and Hannah Brierley of Hermitage whose son James was baptised at Shaw Chapel (Crompton) on 2nd March 1792. The record is on the Lancashire On-line Parish Clerk Project site being taken from the Bishops Transcripts for baptisms 1790-1799.
Brierley/Brearley; Hilton; Kershaw; Buckley; Lees; Ashworth; Lord; Stott; Royton (Longsight); Rochdale (Spotland/Bongs); Shaw (Area by Newhey Boundary e.g Wren's Nest);Saddleworth; Greenacres; Butterworth; Ogden

No sign of James & Hannah Brierley in 1841..although there is a birth registered Crompton 1840 for a Mary Brierley mothers maiden name Barrott.
Looks good for them leaving around 1841..
