corner shop
« on: Wednesday 01 June 22 08:36 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to confirm that there was a corner shop run by my Great Grandparents-Thomas and Mar.y Pemberton. The location was Alice Street ( no longer a street of that name) in Crewe. A census search has not produced an answer. The shop if certain was there in 1920s, as Mary died in 1929.Richard Moon Street might have been the adjoining street to Alice Street.

Was Alice described as a shopkeeper on the death certificate or the wife of a shopkeeper?
Do you have them in the 1921 census?

Doesn't help with the shop, however Alice Street appears on this 1908 map (top near the middle), off Richard Moon St. It appears to become West Ave on the other side of Samuel St.

Maybe a coincidence, there is a mention of a Mr PEMBERTON of Crewe at a conference of sole proprietors of business in Derby in 1917. He is representing the Crewe Tradesmen's Association. He is quoted as saying that the "Crewe Tribunal had treated the shopkeepers very favourably."

That is possibly Joseph Pemberton who was a grocer shopkeeper in the 1911 census.

Mary, not Alice, Pemberton.I haven't accessed census 1921 (nor 1911) successfully as yet.
Thanks for replying.
