Ann Thorpe 1700 - which father do I choose
« on: Thursday 26 May 22 13:59 BST (UK) »
I have Ann Thorpe baptized 6 Mar 1700, father Isaachar Thorpe and Ann Thorpe baptized 27 Oct 1700, father John. Both baptized in Oldham in Lancashire, England. What other information should I look for to help decide which one is my wife's 6th great-grandmother who married Joseph Stansfield in 1716 in Oldham? Have I hit a brick wall? cheers Trevor Walmsley, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Have you looked for marriages and deaths for every Ann or Nanny Thorp in the area in a likely timeframe?
Are you sure it was one of those 2 Ann Thorps?
Did any of the family leave wills which may have mentioned in-laws?

Joseph/Ann name children;
Elizabeth 1716/7
Mary 1718
Anne 1720/1
Jane 1723
James 1726
Joseph 1728
Anne 1731
Alice 1735

Joseph may have been buried 14 Apr 1757  Abode: Older Root

All on LancsOPC

Anne and Mary 1718/1721 both appear to be buried 1726, Daugs of Joseph (FreeREG)

Do you have a Burial for Ann to have a more accurate record of her year of birth?

If Ann & Joseph followed a traditional naming pattern for their children, it's likely grandmothers were Elizabeth and Mary. Perhaps aunts Jane and Alice. Unfortunately all very common names.
Only 2 sons? Shame one of them wasn't Isaacher.

I looked for marriages for Ann Thorp within a 10 mile radius of St. Mary, Oldham and a timeframe of 20 years either side of 1720. Then looked for children of each couple.

I have Ann Thorpe baptized 6 Mar 1700, father Isaachar Thorpe

Clarification regarding date. Baptism date was 6th March 1700/01. Year was 1700 by the Julian Calendar. A new church year began in late March. According to the Gregorian Calendar which was adopted in England in mid 18th century and is the calendar we still use, Ann's baptism was in 1701.

Ann Thorpe baptized 27 Oct 1700, father John.

Abode was Edge Lane in Ryton.
Another baptism in 1708 Anna Thorp, daughter of John, abode Edge Lane, Ryton.
The Ann Thorp who married John Winterbottom in 1722 had Edge Lane as her abode when she married. John Winterbottom's abode was Ryton.
