William Hanson - Shropshire Light Infantry 2942
« on: Monday 16 May 22 14:55 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find info on my relative above who I believe died as a result of injuries sustained in the Boer War (although do not know when). William was born in Church Stretton, Shropshire c 1871 to parents John Hanson and Betsy (nee Speke).

I think I have the correct military serial number above but am not 100% sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards

Ian

He did serve in South Africa but wasn't wounded (many clasps to his medals). He was discharged in December 1901 on termination of his 12 year engagement.

Army papers on FindMyPast: https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FWO97%2F5039%2F032%2F001&parentid=GBM%2FWO97%2F5039%2F570408

Fold3 has WW1 pension ledgers/index cards which (from the Ancestry partial  transcription) suggest that he was injured in 1917 in the Training Reserve

Thanks very much Shaun

Perhaps he isn’t ‘my’ William Hanson then? I found a detail under soldiers of Shropshire. I have just seen that ‘my’ William mhave been born at St Martins but often things used to get mistranscribed or confused.

Hi Shaun

Brilliant!

that is definitely him as the family were at Quarter House on the 1891 census. The info I had of him dying of injuries sustained in the Boer War came from an article in the Wallasey (Cheshire) news of 1928 celebrating the diamond wedding of his father John and mother Betsy, who had moved to the Wirral.

Strange how facts get distorted!

Hi Shaun

Just checked The actual wording of the Diamond Wedding newspaper article and it stated "William served in the Boer War, the effects of which he afterwards died"

So something other than an injury or perhaps the 1917 injury you mentioned.

Thanks again
