Unfortunately two common names here for those who like a challenge!

Birth certificate of my 3x Gt Grandmother Matilda Davis - born 1840 at 90 Golden Lane, Whitecross Street, London - gives her parents as George Davis, shoemaker, and Mary Davis, formelry Taylor.

I can find them on various census returns but cannot find a marriage between George and Mary (sometime Mary Ann).

Matilda is the first child as far as I can tell so presuming the marriage is on or before 1840.

George I am pretty certain was born in 1820 in Blue Anchor Alley and Mary around 1821 in St Luke's.

Can anyone find a likely marriage that I can then investigate further? There are plenty of George Davis marriages to a Mary Ann but none with the surname Taylor - although i could just be going cross eyed with them all.

Thanks in advance  :)

There is a George DAVIS and Mary Ann TAYLOR on the same page for marriages at Kensington March qtr 1846 (3/199). Can't find an actual marriage to see if they married each other. I realise this is after the birth of first children, but certainly happened fairly often.  :-\

The bride in that marriage was Eleanor BOWSTREED.

Thanks Debra, rules that one out.  :)

Noticing that Mary does not seem to know where she was born, if they did marry, it may not have been in London?

Hi Maddy - the census details you posted are the ones I have. Mary's birthplace does seem to jump around a little but where it is given it seems to be in London - but anything is possible. My guess is that it is probably around St Luke's - this family, including other branches - did not move around much staying pretty close to the Golden Lane/Whitecross Street area.

This is interesting, will take a look. 40 years in St Luke's sounds about right!

I also have George dying in January 1884 so the other comments now support this, with Longs Buildings as his previous residence.

Just cannot find that marriage - I'm starting to think they perhaps didn't marry or Mary was married previously and Taylor is not the name under which she was married!
