Finding "how" Cordelia Gedye Scourse died in 1881
« on: Friday 06 May 22 22:42 BST (UK) »
Would love to hear anything about the Fall of 1881 in Cheddar - as this was the time when Cordelia passed.  My great grandmother, Louisa Sourse was approx. 8 months old and we know so little about Corelia.  Thanks!

Her death certificate would show cause of death. You'd need to purchase it from the GRO.

Looks like husband William Scourse was fined in April 1881 for not sending his children to school.

Central Somerset Gazette
02 April 1881 (page 5)
"William Scourse, of Cheddar, and Edward Filer, of Axbridge, were fined 2s. 6d. each and costs for not sending their children to school".

Here's where you can order the 1881 death certificate. You'll have the option of having it sent to you in PDF format via email. The cost is £7.00 for the PDF. https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp

Deaths  Dec 1881

Thank you both so much!  After Cordelia passed, seems one of the older sisters cared for the children.  Rumor was that my great grandmother, Louisa, took a ship west at the age of 9 or so.  Can't find that record but guessing it's "approx. correct".  Thank you!

Do you mean to North America? Just a temporary trip, or did she emigrate?

Looks like Louisa is still in Cheddar, as per the 1891 census.

I see an 1894 Passenger record for an 11-year-old Louisa Source (Liverpool to New York), but its probably a red herring. The image is on FindMyPast (which hopefully you have access to).
Family Search have the record transcription, but not the image.

I am betting you are 100% correct as the rumor was she was "young" - 11 tracks to that.  She immigrated - her siblings were older so she came to Rochester, NY and remained, married and had two beautiful girls (women) - my Grandmother Audrey and my great aunt, Evelyn.  Sadly Louisa passed before I was born.  Thank you - it's marvelous to have folks with the same passion.
