Royal Naval Wives
« on: Friday 29 April 22 11:58 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Bit of an odd query but someone might know.

If a husband was on board a RN ship at the China Station for several years (1900-1903) would he have returned to the UK on leave?

Also did the wives ever go to join their husbands?

Thanks

Good afternoon,

Unfortunately no, Home leave for personnel serving in the far east was only passed through parliament in 1944. They would be allowed 28 days home leave, about 1500 men per month.

In 1900 or soon after air transport was nonexistant. A return trip by sea would have exhausted your leave entitlement. I would assume that shore leave would be permitted but only if safe to do so and then only if your ship was in port for a reasonable time.
