Hi
Shellyesq - never mind, it was an outside chance, my 2x great-grandparents died a long time before William, and his wife never met them, I suspect. Thanks for looking anyway.

regarding Jane Stitts/Gorman, one might be her maiden name and the other a married name. It would have been Absolom's 2nd, so possibly hers.

(I haven't looked at the records yet, just thinking after reading the posts)
Are you able to look at the records Oldohiohome?
Just thinking, if you can, without too much trouble, then they might be a better chance to find William's parents?

Agreed, but most of the indexes are either too late, or tied to Ancestry US or Family Search.
I don't have access to Ancestry US, just UK and neither do I have easy access to a Family History Center.
I just asked, in case Oldohiohome had easy access, if not, then I will see if my nearest Center has access.

Shellyesq and Sandra both have access to ancestry's US records, from what I have seen, and familysearch online is free once you register.

I did find this record at the Oak Hill Cemetery site:
Abslom Johnson, burial # 2010, age 5, died August 20, 1862, cause of death: inflammation of bowels, Dr Runcie
he was in William's household in 1860.

and Jane Stitt's burial:
Jane Johnson, age 38, born Ireland, died November 9, 1858, cause of death: chronic diarrhoea, Dr G B Walker
section 8, lot 43

Regarding William's parents - I know Johnson is a very common name but if you have both Absolom and William in the same county in the US in 1850s and it looks like William has Absolom's children with him in 1860, then I'd take that as enough evidence that they were brothers.
There is a tree at ancestry that says they are half-brothers, but it didn't look very reliable. You'd have to find the English records to be sure.

They weren't from Cambridgeshire by any chance? I think a few families from there settled in Evansville.

Hi Oldohiohome
Yes, Family Search is free but certain images are only available to the History Centers and the Vanderburgh Marriages is one of them, unfortunately!

I am almost certain that this Absolom and William are the people that I think they are and brothers to my great grandfather, and if so, then yes they came from what is now Cambridgeshire but used to be Huntingdonshire. Interesting that some Cambridgeshire families did settle in Evansville.

Hi
As I don't have access to Ancestry US, would anyone that does do me the favour of a quick lookup for the marriage of William Johnson to Mary Stitt in 1851 in Vanderburgh County, Indiana please?
I would like to know if any parents are mentioned please?
Many thanks
Helen

Index to William's marriage to Mary Stitt
image available at FHS or affiliate library.
But "other people on this record" only mentions Samuel T Jenkins and Wm H McLerer

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:8CMP-LPN2

From a History of Vanderburgh County, Indiana:
Samuel T Jenkins was clerk of the circuit court

meanwhile I found the attached item mentioning Absolom in the paper
Evansville Daily Journal, Vol 7, Number 219, 12 January 1855, page 3
