What do you make of "zitt wast"?
« on: Monday 28 March 22 11:02 BST (UK) »
In the Hearth Tax records for Dunbartonshire on ScotlandsPlaces (E69/7/1/10) the transcription of the highlighted line is "given ovir as zitt wast". Any help with this phrase would be appreciated.

Of a building, zitt wast means "still unoccupied" or "even unoccupied".

This is a really good site for all those old Scottish words.
Dictionary of the Scots language.

For 'Zitt' you have to use the symbol '3' - so 3itt.
It's more of a 'y'. GR2 will no doubt know the name of the letter/symbol.
