Photo of Oakwood House, Tottenhill.
« on: Friday 25 March 22 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, possibly a bit of a long shot but does anyone have an old photo of Oakwood House/The Oakwood at Tottenhill near Kings Lynn.  By old I suppose I mean pre 1950’s.  It is now called Andel Lodge Hotel, does anyone know why?
Thanks, SG

No luck I'm afraid. Despite an 1980s guidebook saying it had Tudor origins it doesn't appear to be listed, nor even mentioned as being of local interest on the Norfolk Heritage Explorer.

There are quite a few hits on British Newspaper Archive, including advertisements for its sale in 1867 and some mentions of people who lived there over the years, incidents on the road nearby etc.  I don't currently have a subscription so couldn't guess if any of the articles might have featured photographs.

Under ... South Runcton, Bed and Breakfast ...has a similar picture to the one called the Andel, but looks like its Green sign is blank?

Oakwood House, near Setch, Tottenhill, advertised for sale July 1995

Opened as Andel Lodge circa 1998 (see Reply 2).

The new owner / Licensee must have decided to rename the building around this period.

Oakwood House, between Setchey and Tottenhill.

Setch, was also called Setchy (1811) and Setchey. Snippet view, not to any Scale.

For those interested in Breweries another 1" scale map I have, originally surveyed 1811 shows Setch Brewery, to the South of the River Bridge and "Brewery" annotated on the East side of the road (near The Grange).

I presume you have already emailed the Manager of the Andel Hotel to see if they have any old photographs? If no reply from a letter or email, try a friendly 'phone call. Often people mean to reply, but are busy and don't.

Newspapers in the past often kept a Card Index of people, places and buildings, so the King's Lynn and possibly County newspapers are worth a try?

Try the Chair of Local Historical Societies? Two Local history Societies I know of, won't donate anymore of their Archives or photos, because County Archives had still not listed items years later.

Also the 1995 Selling Agents Landles, likely the same Landles of King's Lynn, established 160 years https://www.landles.co.uk/ may have sold the building before and just might have an Archive of Photos (many don't keep Particulars), but worth a try?

I once got a 1933 photograph of our village Pub by tracing the families of Licensees, from a Granddaughter of one.

1869, 27th February
Captain Willis, Oakwood House, Tottenhill, Lynn Advertiser, Norfolk

1881 Oakwood House, Lynn Road, Tottenhill, Downham, Norfolk
Major General,
Charles Parker Catty, Head, Mar, 55, Major General Retired full pay, born Florence, Italy, British Subject.
Eleanor Georgina Catty, Wife, Mar, 26, born Hintlesham, Suffolk
George Royal, 18, Footman, born Northwold, Norfolk
Sarah Ann Walker, 25, Cook, born Tilney St John's, Norfolk

Added: When, Eleanora Georgina Deane married Catty, a newspaper notice mentions the ... Bishop of Bangor, Cousin of the Bride ... also, the youngest Daughter of the late Rev. W. H. Deane, Rector of Hintlesham.

1881 Surname had been transcribed Colby, but reads Cally. Ancestry and f m p also Colby and Anc., suggest Catty.

The 1901 Census at Portsmouth, Daughter, Pearl A. M. Catty, 19, so looks like she was born 1882, Mother Maiden Surname: Deane, but Births Index says Pearl was registered District Cosford, Pearl Alexina Macdonald Catty.

1921, 7th October relating to a car accident
30th September, Mr F. R. Whitbread of "Oakwood", Tottenhill, met with a ...
Whitbread at Oakwood in 1914 & 1917 newspapers.

Probably, Frederick Robert Whitbread, because in the 1911 Census, a Frederick Robert Whitbread gives his address as Tottenhill.
Added: the 1911 Summary Census Books confirm his residence as "Oakwood House" Private House, Mr F. R. Whitbread.

1937 Frederick James Palmer, 75 years, Abode, The Oakwood, Tottenhill.
1937 Betsy Maria Palmer, 74 years, Abode, The Oakwood, Tottenhill.

Burial
1952 Dorothy Susannah Boon Palmer, 51 years, Abode Oakwood House, died at Evelyn Nursing Home, Cambridge.

Probate 1952 to Frederick George Boon Palmer.
 ----------
Regarding Setchy, Setchey, the Norfolk place appears to have also been called Setch in documents (a few in the return are Setch surnames unfortunately) ...
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_aq=Setch%20Norfolk&_dss=range&_ro=any&_st=adv

Poster Dyingout is also correct, still Setchey on modern day road maps.

Regarding exact searches, the place to the North seemingly has spelling variations.

Regarding the Palmer family members (in the above reply)

1901, 19th July
Mr. Charles Hawkins also conducted some important sales. A freehold property, known as Oakwood, Tottenhill, with two residences with ornamental gardens, outbuildings, four cottages, mineral spring, and 10a. 2r. 28p. of pasture, well studded with trees, was bought by Mr. Fred Palmer for £1120.
Eastern Daily Press, Norwich, Norfolk, England

Looks like the Palmer and Boon families had a long connection with Oakwood House, Tottenhill and were local during the first part of the 20th Century.

1937, 9th July, Lynn Advertiser
MRS. B. M. PALMER.—The death occurred on the Ist inst., at the age of 74 years. of Mrs. B. M. Palmer, of Oakwood House, Tottenhill. widow of Mr. F. J. Palmer, and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Boon, of Manor Farm. ...

Follows on a huge funeral report into next column and numerous Boon family. Three Palmer Sons with their initials, Mr M. Culham, Grandson, also Palmer family members at Yarmouth; Dersington; Eastmoor and West Winch.

1927
Palmer.- June 5, at Eastmoor, Oxborough, William James Boon Palmer, the dearly-loved husband of Sadie Palmer and eldest son of F. J. and B. M. Palmer. Oakwood House, Tottenhill; aged 42 years.
10 June 1927 - Lynn Advertiser - King's Lynn, Norfolk

If no joy with more recent Hoteliers etc., perhaps someone related to, or descended from the Palmer and/or Boon families will still be about and possibly traceable to see if they might have an earlier photo, or know of a family member who might have?

I'll leave it up to you now.

Always a possibility that a relative or descendant of someone mentioned above and who has an old photo might be kind enough to post a photograph of Oakwood House, Tottenhill, please?
