German army uniform

Can anyone identify this German army uniform?

It's a  matter of deciding what colour we think the Waffenrock (tunic) is and the colour of the collar.

Infantry wore blue as a rule but it could be dark or light. For instance Bavarian regts wore light blue. I cant remember all the colours of the top of my head so will have to do a little research.

Collars were dark blue for infantry and black for artillery and I would say the collar is one of those.

Cuffs were another good identifier but unfortunately we don't have them.

I am attaching a link to the GIA, German Imperial Army, and one uniform plate as a guide. From your 2nd photo I would use the right arm to decide on the cuff colours. It is much clearer than the left which is faded out.

When looking at the plate the parts are as follows;

top                     collar
main colour         tunic, buttons down right
center top           shoulder board with regtl number
next down           sleeve with cuff at bottom
bottom left          rear vent and buttons on tunic
center band         belt and buckle
bottom right        trousers

trousers and tunic also show colour of piping

On main page sect infantry and below is a list of regts. 2nd column gives a description of the uniform parts and colours.

I will look through as well but it could take time.

Added; Your man has brandenburg cuffs so ignore any with Swedish cuffs. He also has white piping.

Back again,

I have narrowed it down to 6 regts of infantry.

Numbers 33, 41, 43, 44, 45 and 49.

This is based on the Brandenburg cuffs with vertical section piped in white and white shoulder boards. We can't see the number on the board which would be the definitive answer. Also he is an officer as he has a sword and fancy shoulder boards. I also believe this is post 1867 by the style of collar. Before that the collars were 7cm high.

Good morning,

I have since found 2 more regts to match what we see. They are no's 84 and 85. It may help to put this on the photographic board as well. People on there will help date it more accurately than my post 1867. You can just post a link to this thread.
