Romania tracing a jewish family. Any idea ?
« on: Friday 18 March 22 11:45 GMT (UK) »
Dear members

Maybe someone has some idea how to continue the research. I am looking for a Jewish family lived in Romania,  wife Ilona Radó (October 20, 1891, Kisvárda), husband  Pál Szigeti (November 12, 1891, Budapest) and  their son Péter Szigeti (Oradea, 1921) . They lived in Arad in 1942 and this is the last clue I found in the 1942 Arad census. Someone in the family remembers living in Romania in the 1970s. In the 1942 census they  used these names Szigeti Paul, Szigeti Elena / Ileana and Szigeti Petru / Petre.
I checked macse-myheritage-familysearch-yadvashem -arolsen-ushmm-Jewishgen..etc and talked to the leader of the Jewish community in Arad and unfortunately I can’t find anything. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Hey Nanny Jan and Garstonite

Thanks the replies , I already checked jewishgen and the last data I found the 1942 census from Arad with their names. I will check Geneanet might some results there. The family and the descendent of the family  must still live in Romania  . Some relatives lives in Budapest Hungary but they dont remember anything.
 Thanks

Hello,

I wasn't entirely sure whether you were hoping to trace the family forwards to the present time or backwards in time.

Using the excellent databases on JewishGen and the vast collection of microfilmed records on familysearch.org, I have pieced together the pedigree through the 19th century. Take a look at the attachment. The Roman numerals refer to the generation counting backwards.

The biggest challenge with Hungarian-Jewish genealogy is the name changes - both given and family names - during the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the first half of the 19th century, 85% of Hungarian Jews would have had Biblical given names and German-sounding family names. By the start of WWI, most would have had fully Hungarian names.

Some of the BMD registers actually include a note about an official name change, in other cases the change is only apparent when one sees that father and child have different surnames.

As you can see in the attached pedigree, the ancestors of your Pal Szigeti were originally called Schidlauer (sheed-lower), which changed to Sidlauer in the 1860s. Pal's father and a few uncles adopted Szigeti in the final years of the 19th century, especially if they were living in Budapest.

I'm sure you'll have one or two questions.

Justin

Also trying to trace families in Romania
« Reply #5 on: Saturday 09 April 22 08:02 BST (UK) »
Dear Friend
I too am searching for family members from Romania and seem to have exhausted all currently available sources including JewishGen (Romania Division) and the Romanian Moldava FaceBook Group (Sorin Goldberg and Luc Radu). Both have provided documents which has been fantastic but I am still looking for anything about the Grinstain family from Iasi (GGF Adolphe and GGU Millo and Isidore) and Mendelovici, Rabinovici, Cofman and Goldstain families from Barlad, Romania. Would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Have also searched LDS Family Library, Ancestry and MyHeritage.
Can provide the names/dates I have so far.
Many thanks!

Hello and welcome to Rootschat,

Are you trying to track down living family members or research your deceased ancestry?

The former is anything but straightforward because of privacy laws in many countries. Rootschat also has a privacy policy discouraging the disclosure of personal information of living people. Please read this old post on the subject https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=142443.0

I've seen your messages to the Tracing the Tribe FB group. You've certainly gathered together a great many UK records, and received a lot of help from group members.

It seems like there may have been another Grunstein brother. Did you notice the following birth record in JG's Romania Vital Records database?

Marcu Zalman Grunstein, b. 6 Sep 1881 in Iasi to Moise Aron Grunstein, 46y, musician, and Bassia Mendel, 30y

I have often seen double given names such as Aron-Moise reversed or one part of the name omitted.

Justin

I'm also searching for Romanian ancestors. My trail goes cold at my great-grandfather, Marcu Grunstein. His son was Robert "Bob" Greenstein. Both born in Romania. Recorded in US census in 1950 renting an apartment in NYC. He married a South African named Thelma Gien, from a Lithuanian family.

If anybody has any leads please reach out. Thank you!
