1657 Will
« on: Wednesday 16 March 22 08:29 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking at a 1657 oral Will for Thomas Holburrowe of Sherston.  A couple of things puzzle me and I'm wondering if anyone has come across them before.

Firstly, he leaves all his belongings to his wife "to buy my liveing for my eldest and youngest son". Does this imply that he had more than 2 sons and left everything to the eldest and youngest or as son is in the singular is it a way of saying only son?

Secondly, he declares his Will in the hearing of "the sons whose names are underwritten. Elbright Neale, John Holburrowe, Giles Rodway, Nathaniel Osbourne". As 3 of these have different surnames does son include son-in-law?

All thoughts gratefully received!  Thanks

Can you please post snippets of the areas in question from the will so they can be seen in situ?
It is very difficult to make any judgement without seeing the original bits.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to do that.

Just checking on Forest of Dean Family History Forum - which has transcribed Marriage Allegations 1637-1837 and Marriage Bonds 1730 - 1823 in case the names you mention are family names.

I have however, so far found this entry :  Sherston, Wilts inc (there are quite a few)

If you Google

Sherston Magna Marriages 1653-1812 The Wiltshire OPC - There is a Spreadsheet.

Use the find button and there are a few Holb....  (variations of surname)  marriages.

e.g. Ann HOLBOROW - of Sherstone Magna to Thomas  CURNOCKE, of Didmarton, Glos
29 September 1662

(just search HOLB)

It’s hard to know what to make of ... my eldest, and youngest sonne, but the reading is correct.

The later part reads ... in the hearing of the p(er)sons whose names are underwritten

(Immediately before ...sons there is a letter p with a looped descender – an abbreviation for per, which is often found at this period.)

Bookbox - thank you so much for your "persons".  I can see it now and it makes a lot more sense!

Capetown - thank you for these.  I will certainly check on widow Margery Adey and also look at the spreadsheet.
