1921 Census and business addreses
« on: Tuesday 15 March 22 11:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find my Father and his family in the 1921 census.
I think he was either in Warrington or Manchester, I know at his birth, the family home was a grocers shop.
The family then moved to Manchester, 1939 register confirms.
Checking in the 1921 census address search I can find neither of the addresses, but properties either side which were residential are there.
Did the census record business properties?
Have also tried search by name for the wider area but drawn a blank!
Any ideas?

There are a lot of mis-transcriptions;  have you tried using a wildcard approach for their names?
Howard , Viney , Kingsman, Pain/e, Rainer/ Rayner, Barham, George, Wakeling (Catherine), Vicary (Frederick)   all LDN area/suburbs  Ottley/ MDX,
Henman/ KNT   Gandy/LDN before 1830  Burgess/LDN
Barham/SFK   Rainer/CAN (Toronto) Gillians/CAN  Sturgeon/CAN (Vancouver)
Bailey/LDN Page/KNT   Paling/WA (var)

Hi,
I have tried all variant options to click or enter part names I have come across in the past, but no joy.

I find it strange that in the address search the property numbers are missing, but adjacent properties are there.

I have found a kelly's directory for 1933 with my GF name and the address in question.
I have not found any directories for Manchester and Salford going back to 1920's, does anyone know if they exist?

Have you tried the electoral rolls on FindMyPast? They have Manchester & Salford from that era.

I'm looking through Ancestry's content at the moment, I don't have a Findmypast subscription.

Have you considered they may have been on holiday?

Have you tried  the advanced search
Input just the surname and in the address field put the name of the street (complete with Road/Avenue/Street etc as appropriate)
Then scan down the list and hover over the icons to see if you can suss out which of them have other names that you recognise?

Fiddling round with the search like that can often bring up results.
It would work just as well with just a first name and a street address.
