1841 census lookup Lancs Formby/Birkdale Please
« on: Saturday 03 September 05 18:38 BST (UK) »
Please could someone with access to the 1841 census for Lancashire Probably Birkdale or Formby please do a look up for me on:

Michael Formby born abt 1822 in Formby and his family.

In 1851 he is married to Alice Formby and they are living in Snuttering Lane. I am hoping he was still with his parents in 1841 so that I can trace back. He has a sister - Ann Formby born abt 1831 in Formby who is living with Michael and his wife in 1841.

Many thanks

Jean

I know this is a very late response.... and probably doesn't help much... but Michael Formby was on Snuttering Lane in 1841, aged 20, a labourer. Though a separate household, he was in the same building as Thomas Abram aged 50, 45 year old wife, Catherine (born Ireland) and their children.

I'm afraid it does not provide any obvious family links (unless Catherine was his mother and had remarried)

Hi, Many thanks for this. Yes, I had come across it in the meantime. Catherine, was his mother. She was originally married to Joseph Formby and her maiden name was Cantwell. I have never managed to find the marriage between Joseph Formby and Catherine Cantwell although I have found the baptism of Michael at Our Lady of Compassion, Formby. I have still not managed to find a burial for Michael who died 15 February 1852.

Many thanks for your help

Jean

Until 1821, the only church/burial place was St Cuthberts in Churchtown for any North Meols/Birkdale folk... and even after the new churches arrived, marriages and burials still often took place there, being the traditional place of their background. However, as Michael was born in Formby, he would have no emotional links to St Cuthbert's (and Cantwell wasn't a local family, so it's likely his wife wouldn't have a family tradition to follow either). That being the case, I would guess that Christ Church would be the most likely place of his burial, which opened in 1821 and was the primary location of baptisms, marriages and burials for those living closer to the new Southport than to Churchtown.

The burial ground at Christ Church no longer exists, and the few gravestones still there have been used as paving stones for the path.

There are one or 2 other places he might have been buried, such as Eastbank Lane Congregational, but this closed in 1966.

The main cemetery in Southport was not built until 1866, and would probably have been the family's choice if he'd lived until then, as it was built on Snuttering Lane (which became Cemetery Rd). If his wife survived until after 1866 and remained in the vicinity, I would imagine she was buried there, which might be your best chance of finding further information on the family from grave inscriptions.

Sorry, just realised... it was his mother, not wife, named Cantwell.

Me again.. it he was baptised Catholic.... then the baptisms would be RC, but at this time, his parents' marriage would be Protestant, as Catholic marriages weren't legal (unless they didn't bother with a legal ceremony, but this is unlikely).

If Michael had a Catholic burial, it may have been in St Mary's on Seabank Rd, opened in 1831. This does still have a graveyard, though small (and full of nuns!).... I used to have some pretty photos of it, with the old gravestones surrounded by thousands of bluebells.

I found an Ann who looked like a good match living with parents Joseph and Ellen (Helen Norris), and felt sure this was Michael's sister, especially finding that she was with parents in 1841 and 1861, but not in 1851 (when your Ann was with Michael)... but this family are listed in IGI, and therefore almost certainly prostestant, and have no Michael listed amongst their children.

Hi, yes they seems to swap about really. Michael is christened RC but is married (to Alice Travis) at Christ church. Catherine (my great grandmother)is christened at St Marie's RC in 1850 but her brother is christened at Christ Church in 1848. I have checked the burials for St Marie's at Lancs Records Office but no sign of Michael's burial nor at Christ Churchor St Cuthberts. I have also checked the gravestones at Our Lady of Compassion, Formby but no luck.

I have poured over the Joseph Formby and Ellen/Helen Norris but it dosen't match up. There is also some confusion over Michael's sister Ann as you say she is living with Michael on 1851 census aged 20 so birth c1831 This is odd if Joseph (Michael's father) died before Catherine married again (1827) then Ann must be older but haven't managed to track her down.
