Trying To Find More Info On A Relative In Saskatchewan Canada
« on: Wednesday 02 March 22 03:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I've come across what is almost certainly my 2x great Aunt's cemetery record on Ancestry for her burial in Saskatchewan (she emigrated there in 1922), which I've attached. Because I'm based in the UK can anyone recommend how to get more info on this? It's very stark in terms of info. Susan Amy Knight was born on 06 Oct 1865 in London but emigrated to be with her niece (who she helped raise) who was called Marie Hamilton Campbell (maiden name Marie Hamilton Knight). Susan emigrated when the rest of her family had all died. The info attached is down as part of the cemetery records for Saskatchewan, but with no further info (ideally an official death record)

It will be easier to search with a bit more information. Am I right in thinking that Marie Hamilton Knight was born in England in 1890 and married George A Campbell there in 1917? These dates came up when I searched on freebmd.org.uk.
My first thoughts were: 1921 Canada census and passenger lists. This might be them in the 1921 census with George's surname spelled 'Kambell'.

Hi Liz,

Yes that is correct. I have Susan's emigration record and it mentions she's going out there to live with her niece (in 1922). I was thinking more along the lines of getting a death record for her (I'm guessing the 1931 census isn't available yet?)

I don't know when the 1931 census might be available, but the 1921 helps to pinpoint them on a farm in Saskatchewan near Melfort.
The University of Alberta has a searchable collection of local newspapers for the prairie provinces, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, in what's called the Peel collection. Just looking at their index of newspapers, it doesn't look like Melfort had a newspaper of its own, but it may have been covered by other nearby places. In small communities, the newspapers gave lots of detail about local people, and there could well be some mention of one of the family, possibly Susan's funeral.

Another possibility is a mention in a local history book. That part of the world only became a province in 1905, so there isn't a long written history. If George grew up in that area, his family might be mentioned. There's a website that has a lot of Canadian local history books online, but I'm not sure of the URL now. It used to be called ourroots.ca, but I know that has changed. I'll see if I can track it down.
There was a census for all of Canada in 1911 and another in 1916 just for the prairie provinces, which might help to establish whether George Campbell was a farmer before WW1. The census for 1921 says he was born in Saskatchewan. (I presume he was posted overseas to have married Marie in England in 1917.) After WW1, many soldiers were given farmland, but not all managed to make a go of it. There might be a record of his WW1 service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. If available, it's likely to be at:
 https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/Pages/introduction.aspx
If he was not familiar with farming, the family might have moved to a different area. Do you know where in Saskatchewan Susan died?

The local histories are now hosted by the University of Calgary. From the page link below, you can find a history of Birch Hills, which is mentioned as a location on the census. There is an index at the back of the book, which includes an entry for Peter Campbell, describing his experience as an early settler. I thought this might be the same family, because his wife's name was Emma, same as George's mother, but a probate record shows George's father was also called George. Peter may be no relation.

The WW1 record for George Archibald Campbell mentions his wife, Maria, of 8 Alpha St, Rye Lane, Peckham, London. His address after demobbing was Winton, Saskatchewan, near the city of Prince Albert. He was described on his attestation paper as a farmer. A search of the Winton cemetery on findagrave shows Susan Amy Knight was buried there. Unfortunately, the photo of the headstone is unreadable and there is no further information about her there.
