Menny Billy Cornwall ??? Birth location clarification
« on: Wednesday 23 February 22 16:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello! I am hoping someone can help me with the correct place of birth for Charles Mutton in the 1881 England Census.  Both Ancestry and FamilySearch have transcribed it as “Menny Billy” ?

https:// www. familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27P-FX5Y

(I’m not sure if links are permitted so I’ve put spaces)

1881 England Census for Samuel Mutton
Lancashire, Manchester, St George, District 21
It’s the 6th entry from the bottom.

His birth was registered in 1863 St Austell, Cornwall.

Thank you
Armstrong (Dublin & Canada)
Gregory (Dublin)
Flatters (Bourne, Lincolnshire, England & Canada)
Brewer (Calne, Wiltshire, England & Canada)
Prevost (Canada)

1881 reference is RG11 piece 4003 folio 102 page 9

Maybe the enumerator could not read the writing and it is supposed to be Mevagissey  ::)

https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CON/indexpars#M

It is in the right registration district (St Austell)

I would suggest that it is Menabilly, a small settlement on Gribbin Head, between Polkerris and Fowey, in the parish of Tywardreath.  It was home to the Rashleigh family.

Daphne du Maurier lived there, having used the house as inspiration for Manderley in 'Rebecca.'

It is across from St Austell.
,
My former post should have read "both close to St Austell."
Some how this tablet writes what it wants and not what I type. And unless I see it in time  it writes the wrong thing.

I don't know how to change it.
