Struggling Asylum cottage search
« on: Sunday 20 February 22 09:24 GMT (UK) »
Inept and baffled and thank you to Maureen et al who made previous suggestions, I have just paid £6 on 1921 Census for access to Kingsckere Road record and it's not the Wellington Terrace asylum cottages it's at the top of the road, I have established there is also a Wellington Terrace in Kingsclere, Newbury Road  a village 6 miles away BUT still I cannot find Wellington Terrace, (old) Kingsclere  Road on the 1921 Census, I have tried putting in Sherborne St John (the parish it was in at the time) and nothing, tried an Alfred G Turnbull Wellington Terrace on the 1939 register and nothing??? Although Maureen found him, I use find my past site.  This feels like a dead end right now 😪 this house was built 1913 for people who helped to build the Park Prewett Asylum, so I know it should be in the 1921 Census........

The Alfred that Maureen suggested was listed as Alfred G Turnball  on the Register ;D

Here is the start of Wellington Terrace on the 1939 Register. The next street is Dunsford Crescent so it is the right one:

On FindMyPast:  https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=TNA%2FR39%2F2370%2F2370I%2F008&parentid=TNA%2FR39%2F2370%2F2370I%2F008%2F25

Also linking to the previous thread - not sure why you have started a new one

Looking at some of the older residents of Wellington Terrace in  the 1939 register, Walter Simpkins (b.1872) is in the same parish on the 1921 census. I tried putting in an address for him in the advanced search - Wellington Terrace doesn't work but Park Terrace does - is Park Terrace possibly a former name of Wellington Terrace?

There was a change of street name

Walter H Simpkins was at 3 Wellington Terrace in 1939

On the 1930 electoral roll he was at 3 Park Prewett Cottages

Same for Horace Seagon - at 26 WT in 1939, and 26 PPC in 1930.

And Arthur Routley at 13 WT in 1939, and 13 PPC in 1930

Interesting, there were cottages on the Park Prewett Asylum site as wel, so it's possible they moved from Wellington Terrace to the cottages, they were all workers at the local asylum and Wellingtin Terrace and Park Prewett cottages were owned by the asylum
