St Michael's Church,Inveresk- Designed by Robert Nisbet 1802
« on: Tuesday 15 February 22 14:40 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find more information on Robert Nisbet who designed St Michael's Church, Inveresk.

There is information published in the Dictionary of Scottish Architects, that Robert Nisbet began to practise in the early years of the 19th century. He was a mason in Newbiggin, Musselburgh.
He died on 11 February 1831.

I believe this to be an error in the published book, as Robert Nisbet who died in 1831 was actually baptized in 1800-" Scotlands People Church registers- Old Parish Registers - Births and baptisms- Robert Nisbet baptized 11 May 1800,Father was a mason living in Newbiggning, witnesses David Steel and Robert Nisbet senior. - 689/ 90 373 Inveresk and Musselburgh"

This would have made him 2 years old when his designed was submitted.

So who was the correct Robert Nisbet who designed the church is my question.

Hi ClanNisbet,

Had a look at Wills on Scotlandpeoples website, there are 2 entries from Musselburgh

" Nisbet, Robert - 22/10/1833, Builder in Musselburgh, Inventory, Edinburgh Sheriff Court Inventories
SC70/1/49" could be the one you are looking for.

" Nisbet, Robert -21/12/1810, Road Surveyor & Mason in Milhill of Musselburgh,
Inventory ; Disposition ; Settlement, Edinburgh Sheriff Court Inventories SC70/1/3"
Could this be the father?

Looking at the Wills could give more info.

Tom Buchanan
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Thanks, for the reply, I have looked at the wills as part of the research, you're right it could be the father who died in 1810, just need to try and lock that down.

I thought about trying to get my hands on an original copy of the design which would give a better clue to the true identity.

If you come across any other information please post it.

Thanks again.
