Searching Relatives Who Have Emigrated From England To Australia
« on: Monday 14 February 22 14:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have a couple of relatives who seemingly emigrated to Australia in the 1950s/60s and was seeking advice about where best to search for such people. Is there an equivalent to the UK's freeBMD site where you can search public databases or is it like the living struggle that is Canada where you have very limited information to search?

Many thanks in advance

This link might be useful. It gives details of passenger arrivals. My in-laws are on there.  They emigrated to Australia in 1970

Hello this is a topic I'm very interested in as I recently found out some of my ancestors emmigrated to Australia before ww1. I have managed to find the ship and where to but Find My Past want more money to update my info. I also found out that the Australian government website allow residents to search their library for free. I don't have that luxury (yet) but maybe it could help someone here who has relatives living there.

Agree about the immigration records at the National Archives of Australia.

BDM records exist for each state and indexes are free online. However, there are privacy provisions and you will find states have limitations of when they will release records. In many it is 100 yrs for a birth etc. These rules will be displayed on the site of each BDM record.

Ryerson  index is useful for deaths in NSW. Trove is the free newspaper site and many an obituary, death notice, funeral, birth notice wedding notice and description of wedding appeared in newspapers in Australia. You may also find descriptions of the voyage in the newspapers if by ship.

Hi folks, and particularly Libby.

You might try these two sites:

Unassisted Migrants 1852 - 1923 (several useful links):  https://guides.slv.vic.gov.au/migration/unassisted

Unassisted Passenger lists search:  https://prov.vic.gov.au/explore-collection/explore-topic/passenger-records-and-immigration/unassisted-passenger-lists

Good luck!

Peter

Hello Peter, excuse my late reply, My thanks for your response. I did find one relation who emmigrated  in 1911 and at the outbreak of ww1 he signed up with the Australian infantry. Unfortunately he was killed at the Somme on Christmas eve 1916 and is now resting at peace in Villiers-Bocage in Belgium.
I emigrated to France with my husband nearly 20 years ago and find myself closer to this man now, and I didn't even know of his existence until last year. Funny old world isn't it?
I believe there were others who travelled to Australia so my research continues, thanks again.
regards libby
