Hello, 1st timer.    I am looking for a George Webb Simmons who was lost at sea round March 1871.   He was from St Lawrence Kent, England and he was born in 1826.   He was noted as a captain aboard the vessel "Calliope".   If anyone could suggest a site with records of captains or men lost at sea, that would be helpful.   Thank you

Lost at sea, on the homeward voyage, to the inexpressible grief of his family, from whom he had been absent six years, George Webb Simmons, aged 45. of 2, Farringdon-terrace, Cassland-road, South Hackney, owner and commander of the ship Calliope, which left Calcutta for New York, March 30, 1871, was spoken April 23rd, not heard of since.

I found a record of my GG grandfather, who died at sea, in the Registers Of Wages And Effects Of Deceased Seamen, 1852-1889. It's available on Find My Past. I'm not sure about other sites.

FindMyPast has a George Web Simmons on the Seamens Ticket Register, born Ramsgate.  (Ticket number 38942 in BT114/18)

Nothing much to add really. CALLIOPE official number 25238 was lost, with all hands? on 23/April 1871. Voyage Calcutta for New York City with a general cargo.
