Thanks Carol (and all). The image is a screenshot from a Slideshow and it's all I have. Unfortunately I can't look on the back and there does not appear to be any indication of the photo studio visible.

Did she move her hands at the wrong time? They’re a bit blurry. You would expect them to be resting on the fence to keep still. The little basket seems to be hanging oddly on the fence too.

Not sure if this comment will be helpful or not. My grandmother was b 1881 -- i have a tin type photo of her as a toddler or young child propped up in hay.  That was near Parramatta then still rural in nsw,
But rural shots might have been the fashion possibly adopted later in Australia than overseas.

Wonder if travelling photographers carried their props with them. That rustic gate while not convincing would have been portable at least.

You should perhaps contact the poster of the slideshow to see if they are willing to send you copies of the original photo front and back and if they have any additional information.

I am not sure if there are copyright issues with you reposting someone elses work.

Regards
pH

I agree with pH that it might be useful to know if there is any sort of photographer’s stamp/embossing on the photo, which might help with identification of sitter and where photo was taken.

Understood. I thought the OP might be able to chase up the owner of the original.

Ruskie - see my reply #4

Also, as has been suggested, it's best, if possible, to show all of the photo uncropped and the back. Both can give more clues to the date. We do try to give an estimate with whatever you have though  :)
