One last thought.

Online trees suggest John junior is the son of James and Sarah but, if he is, I’m really stuck.

Ancestry hints link John H Burrows of Colesville NY to a John Burrows christened  23 Aug 1830 in Saxmundham, Suffolk, England, son of a James and Sarah.  I think the hints come from records that people attach to their trees. Someone probably saw the James and Sarah in Colesville and jumped to conclusions. Unfortunately they forgot to look at the 1851 census of Saxmundham which has the father James, a housekeeper, and his 3 sons: John, James, and Joseph. So the John christened in 1830 is accounted for.

Yes, thank you. I had come to the same conclusion about the Saxmundham John. If he is my John, he comes from Devon/Somerset not Suffolk.

Thanks again for your help.
