Donald Coghill
« on: Sunday 30 January 22 10:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I’m looking for the parents of Donald COGHILL. I don’t know much about him but I do know he was married to a woman called Ann (surname unknown) and that they had a son called William. All of the info I have on William is below:

WILLIAM COGHILL
Born about 1807 in Caithness. Australian newspaper states he was a native of Wick
Immigrated to Australia sometime before 1841
Married Elizabeth Ann Foster in Melbourne, Australia, on the 29th Nov 1841
Died in Grafton, New South Wales, Aus in 1869

William’s death record lists the names of his parents as Donald Coghill and Ann. I’ve tried looking for Donald and Ann but I can’t seem to track them down. If someone can help me figure out who Donald’s parents were I would be very grateful.

Kind Regards

This is the nearest family I can find for a William born about 1807.

DAVID OGILL   Married    CATHRINE OGG   20/01/1794   Wick

Possible baptisms but the were others in the County of the same names, however given that their eldest son was David and their second son Alexander they fit the Scottish naming pattern, except Margaret was their eldest daughter and Isobel their second daughter. No child called Elspet, William was their youngest child. Sadly no death records for Wick before 1855.

COGLE   DAVID   DAVID COGLE/MARGT FLETT   13/04/1766   Wick

OAG   MARGRAT   ALEXANDER OAG/ELSPET FARQUHAR   20/04/1769   Wick

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Donald COGHILL died as result of workplace injury at the Belmore Sugar Mill at Grafton. He was in Grafton for a specific job at the mill.

His wife and 8/9 children were in Sydney. William COGHILL and his family lived in Sydney.

SMH 23 October 1869 p1
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/13193968?
On the 9th September, from injuries received at the Belmore Sugar Mill, Grafton, Clarence River, Mr. WILLIAM COGHILL, of Chippendale, in his 62nd year, leaving a widow and eight children
to lament their loss. Native of Wick, Scotland.

William COGHILL was injured on Saturday, and died on Tuesday, during which time he was increasingly weak, exhausted and barely conscious.

Who is around when William COGHILL dies, in Grafton, that his death certificate names his parents?

What was William’s occupation?
His daughter’s marriage record refers to him as a ‘gentleman’. So this infers he would be well educated and probably come from an educated family.

What is William’s age and place of birth as recorded on his children’s NSW birth certificates? (after 1856)
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)
