James Hills married Martha Emery - both believed passed away at Gravesend
« on: Saturday 15 January 22 04:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello with greetings from Australia,

Due to limited Kent records access here in Oz, I write seeking info regarding the birth and parentage records of my 3rd great grandfather James Hills Senior and his wife Mary Ann Emery, who appears born in 1791 at Chatham. I believe James and Mary Ann were married on 4 Dec 1815 at St Botolph's, Northfleet, Kent.

Their son James, my 2nd great grandfather, appears to have been baptized at St Georges Gravesend in Nov 1816, and his sister Sarah married Edward Haffel Coy, was born in South Benfleet Essex in 1824. James junior married Louisa Rowe at Portsmouth in 1839, and they immigrated to my home state of Victoria in Jan 1840.

Your assistance regarding James Hill Senior and Martha Ann Emery's parents and families would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your time and expertise.
K. J. Mixo Sydenham

Just had a quick look at this and is James Jnrs Fathers Occp a Carpenter on his 1839 M/C?

Also a Tree has James Snr dying 24 July 1853 Gravesend.

That is not him.

GRO has    HILLS, JAMES age 0**
GRO Reference: 1853  S Quarter in GRAVESEND AND MILTON  Volume 02A
(so under 1 yr)

Burial also is on FreeREG age 9 mths****
(www.freereg.org.uk)

James is deceased on Sarahs 1846 M/C and no occp is shown for him.
Martha Ann Hills is a witness.

Trish :)

Rosie99, I would love to know how to do a search on that site. It has been mentioned before in other threads, and i have not yet worked out how to navigate my way around. Any hints please? :)

FindMyPast takes you directly to the site from their transcripts.

I used to be able to find my way round Cityark before it was 'moved' but like you, not any more so I was delighted to find links on F M P  ;D

CityArk

From  https://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

You first select Parish records (archdeaconry of Rochester)
Then you select the parish you want to look at
Next page click on the blue Plus sign
Next page click on the plus sign next to “Incumbent parish registers”
Various choices come up. They aren’t always in a logical order.
Choose the one you want. This time clicking on the writing
The next screen won’t look much different except there is some red writing.

Above the line drawn across the screen you will see the words

Digitised version  (and in the example I am working through) P008-01-01 pdf.
It looks insignificant on the page.

Click on the blue pdf number and wait for the file to load. They are large and can take awhile.

Repeat as necessary 😀

Hope that makes sense

Thank you indeed, mckha489  :)
I too, have copied your directions and will keep on hand for when needed. Your directions were excellent, but I would never have worked it out without them. One would think there should be a clearer & more accessible method. ::)
