Mary Fairclough born c.1812 Preston - sister Jane Fairclough?
« on: Sunday 09 January 22 02:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me through a brick wall.

I'm descended from a Mary Fairclough born c.1812 in Preston. She went on to marry a Robert Miller in 1835 in an Anglican ceremony in Leyland. I'm trying to find out her parents.

Looking at the Online Parish Clerks, there are about 20 Mary Faircloughs baptised / born in the area within a couple of years (going from Anglican parish records). I've tried to narrow down her DOB through census records, but her stated age is sometimes out by a year. Her marriage certificate doesn't have an age.

A Jane Fairclough and a John Bolton were witnesses to the marriage, so perhaps Jane is a sister - but again, Jane Fairclough is not an uncommon name.

One approach that occurs to me is to trace the marriage records of all Mary Faircloughs, then find these Marys in the Census records. By looking at the ages they have and the stated birthplace, then I might be able to eliminate at least some of them.

I might also see if there are Fairclough parents that have children Mary and Jane.

DNA doesn't seem to yield any plausible matches.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other approaches I might take?

Thanks you!

Tim

She died 7th September 1869 in Hulme, when her age was recorded as 58 years (given by her husband as informant).

When they married the banns state they are both of Cuerden so perhaps the Chorley area rather than Preston.

ADDED
Look at Edward Fairclough and wife Ann baptizing children at Chorley beginning 1802

Thank you, that's something to delve into further. Some 20 years after their marriage they lived at Cuerden for a while.

Another piece of the puzzle is that they had their first child four months after the wedding. Is it possible they would marry outside of their home parish because of this? Is this the sort of thing you tried to hide in 1835?

I've looked through the 1841 census for Cuerden looking for a Fairclough family, but there were none.
