Newport Iron Works
« on: Sunday 26 December 21 21:27 GMT (UK) »
A friend of mine is doing some research into Charles D Phillips, the iron works on Emlyn Street in Newport. The Newport Centre now stands on the site or the works. Does anyone know where we might find a photo of the factory before it was demolished in the 1930s? I've searched and only found pictures of the blue plaque. I've also searched through all my Uncles books (local historians will have heard of Terry Underwood).
Many thanks in advance  :)

Have you contacted the records office?  Many councils take photographs before demolition

There is this drawing in the illustrated weekly newspaper "Graphic" on Saturday,  Jan. 26, 1889. Is it the same one?  :-\

Modified to strike through - I think this is Middlesbrough.

Hi chepstowgirl, CaroleW, and maddys52,  :)

Unfortunately, the second image posted here, just like the first, appears to be of the Middlesbrough works, and not the Welsh one that the OP's seeking.

If you scroll down from the photo, it says:

"This photo is in 2 groups"

[One of these is called "Industrial Archaeology / Architecture (North)"]

and:

"This photo is in 4 albums"

[3 of these mention the River Tees which is in Northern England]

 :(

You're right, chepstowgirl, there don't seem to be any readily-available images of Mr Phillips' ironworks; just images of blue plaques, etc. During my search I found this, however, and thought I'd let you know in case you've not already seen it:

I think your best chance of finding an image of the ironworks, would be to contact:

Newport Library, in case there's one among their local history collection
https://www.newport.gov.uk/en/Leisure-Tourism/Libraries/Find-a-library/Central-Library.aspx

and, as CaroleW suggested in Reply #1, Gwent Archives - in case the ironworks was photographed prior to its demolition

Thank you all such for your efforts. I did find the images mentioned/shared below but as theirchild says, they are not the factory in Wales.
I will suggest to my friend that he checks the library and the archives.

Your help is much appreciated. Enjoy the rest of your Christmas time, and happy new year  :D

I'm sure you have already checked, but there are many many items about Charles D PHILLIPS in newspapers of the time, some most complementary.  :)

Thanks Maddy, I'm sure they have found these. Just  shame there's no photo online.  :)
