« on: Tuesday 14 December 21 15:28 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to figure out the name of the place for the image attached. Can anybody help? The name of the parish is St Margaret in East Barming, Kent

"James Crittenden the son of Williand and Mary of [...] baptised August the 17"
"Samuel Crittentenden the son of William and Mary of [...] was baptised June the 10th 1688

This is the entry for Samuel in the red box.  I can't see an entry for a James.

...the son of William and marget critond__
was baptized June the 10th 1688

Presumably if the entry were visible right to the end the last word of the first line would be critonden.

There is no "of".  The parents are William and Marget.  The surname has been truncated.  I didn't see the entry for James.

Further to my post, the surnames at the left have been added later by a different hand.

They aren't always the same as those written in the original entry - for example, Bassage becomes Bossack and hayman becomes Fayman.

I think Samuel is Chitenden at the left and critond__ at the right.

Thanks all, now it makes sense. The modern surname CRITTENDEN has various different spellings the further back you go including Critondon, Chittenden. Apologies I didn't include the other image but it's very similar to this. One entry has one of the child Chittenden and another spelled Crittenden and another spelled Creightingdon. I guess different people writing in the parish book all had their version of how to spell phoenetically which can easily happen with a surname like this.

I Havent been able to clarify the place name, but have some info that may or may not be of use to you.
Samuel Critenden (also spelt Crittenden sometimes) father William was born in Maidstone, Kent in 1641. Mother Mary was born Margaret Martin in 1651 at West Farleigh, Kent.
Samuel married Mary Hodge on 31st Jan 1727 at Rochester, Kent.

Thanks for sharing, yes I was also aware of these dates. I have Margaret's burial entry in the parish listed on the 1st October 1718 but weirdly did not find the spouse/ father of the children William who died before her as she's already listed as a widow. I have a burial date of William for 5th October 1716 from someone else but I couldn't find it in the book
