Place name near Abergavenny Monmouthshire
« on: Tuesday 14 December 21 07:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have this record for a marriage in Bergavenny ((Abergavenny) I can't make out the place where Anne Morgan came from. Capella (?) something.

It might not be anywhere near Abergavenny, it sounds English (Herefordshire?)  but it is really odd!

Please help, I am always grateful for any advice!

Cheers,

Llanfi  :) :) :) :) :) :)

Could it be some anglicised incorrect spelling or lteral colloquial spelling of "Cae Pella" in which the e is dropped in the word Cae. Cae pella could be the name of a dwelling. Cae means field and pella means furthest.

There is a Coed Cae Pella near Llandegveth https://historicplacenames.rcahmw.gov.uk/placenames/recordedname/9e3d72e5-9bc4-49cc-8274-c5ace85f066e

This is my guess at it.
I think it is Capella Ballon.
My reasoning behind it.
Cappella is Latin for Chapel and the Ballon family were headed by Hamelin de  Ballon 1st  Baron Abergavenny having been given the land by William Rufus

Anyone agree or shall I get my coat  :) :)

I was barking up the wrong tree.
I bow to the superior eyesight knowledge of Bookbox -see reply below.
I can now see it as Bettous
i'll get my coat.  ;D ;D

I think it’s probably written Cappella Bettous or Bettws (though admittedly the last letter isn’t a perfect match with other final S's).

You might want to consider Bettws Chapel, very near Abergavenny. See here ...

Tend to agree with Bookbox having properly downloaded the image. Might a chapel of Hameline de Ballon be more associated with the Abergavenny priory ?

Hi,

The word for hat or cap in Italian is cappello (masculine, plural: cappelli). It derives from the Latin cappellus which in turn comes from the word cappa meaning hood.

Could it be Upper Bettws in dog-Latin?

Just a thought!

Thank you all for your valiant efforts and kind attention!

Cheers,

Llanfi  :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
