Henry Mcilwaine -Headwood Farmer 1833-1897
« on: Sunday 28 November 21 20:26 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on Henry - if he was buried at Kilwaughter cemetery and his wife Matilda McFall?  His son Sir Robert McIlwaine 1871-1943 was my great grandfather.

For reference-
Death of Henry McIlwaine-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05878/4666866.pdf
Administration of the estate of Henry M'Ilwaine late of Headwood Kilwaughter County Antrim Farmer who died 27 February 1897 granted at Belfast to Edward M'Ilwaine and Arthur M'Ilwaine both of Headwood Farmers the Sons.
Widow Matilda died 1919-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1919/05146/4418315.pdf
Probate of the Will of the late Matilda McIlwaine, Headwood, Kilwaughter, Larne, Co. Antrim, Widow, who died 17 April 1919, granted at Belfast 6 August 1919 to Edward McIlwaine, Retired Farmer and Arthur McIlwaine, Farmer, the sons. Effects: £308 8s 8d.
Possibly Matilda left instructions in her Will to be buried with husband Henry but equally possible she didn't do so.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Linda,

I see you have already found it, but just for reference, here is another thread which discusses Sir Robert McIlwaine (among others):
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=514644.0

You’ll see at the bottom of page 2 there is a post by allister1964.  I would suggest you get in touch with him because he probably knows more than anyone about this McIlwaine family.

E.g. here is one part of Henry McIlwaine’s ancestry (which I know mainly thanks to Allister’s help):

1.   Roger LENNON m. Martha LOVE
2.   Robert LENNON (c1739-1811) m. Margaret WILSON (c1752-1844)
3.   Agnes LENNON (c1796-1858) m. John McILWAINE (c1793-1873)
4.   Henry McILWAINE (c1833-1897) m. Matilda McFALL (c1839-1919)

The Margaret Wilson mentioned above is recorded in Crookshank’s History of Methodism:

…At the close of service, the preacher [Joseph Morrison] having expressed his willingness to return if anyone would kindly entertain him, Mrs Robert Lennon who was present, said, ‘ If you can put up with the plain accommodation of a farmer’s house, we shall be glad to see you.’ Her invitation was at once accepted, and since that day Ballygowan has been a Methodist Preaching place. The extensive and lasting results of this one sermon to the cause of God have been truly marvellous. Mr and Mrs Lennon had no less than nine daughters, as well as two sons, who all, or nearly all, in time were led to give their hearts to God. They became thoroughly identified with the Society, and, having married persons of a kindred spirit, their children and grandchildren - the Lennons, Wilsons, McNinches, Vances, Ritchies, Kirks, Knoxes, and others - have forms a large proportion of the Methodists on the Antrim and Ballyclare Circuits…

I’m aware of at least half a dozen descendants who have done DNA testing (on FTDNA).  So if you want to go down that route, there should be plenty of cousins to match.
