Sidney King b.1851 Melbourn, Cambridge
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 18:58 BST (UK) »
Just found a Sidney in 1861 Census. I'm not sure if he's mine or not. He emigrated to US in1869.  Anyone have any info on him or his family?

9/18/05 I have received a copy of Sidney's birth certificate. He was born in Melbourn on 3 April 1851. His father was Frederick and his mother Elizabeth( Barker) King.  I have a death certificate with a birth date as 1 April 1853, but according to various US census his birth was   <1851>. I'm trying to find any other info to narrow in on this birth date.  I also sent for Frederick King and Elizabeth Barker's marriage certificate so I have their fathers' names. Looking for Frederick King's mother-Elizabeth(maiden name?). She married Robert King. I've found her in the 1841 Census. She was 58.

Presumably you have his parents and siblings in 1861.

Cambs FHS has an index for 1851 and 1841 on their website
http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html.
If you need details of anyone in the index just post the reference and I or someone else will check it out.

Melbourn was full of Kings.

David

I have a transcription of the parish records for Melbourn 1558-1851. No sign of a Sidney King, but there is a
Cyrus King baptised 26 Oct 1851, son of Joseph & Susan, lab. After a quick scan through, I can see they have more children, Frederick, James, Lewis and maybe more. If you think this might be your family, I'll look through properly.

Thank you for your effort. I've added the information I've obtained in the mean time to my message.  After I verify whether this is the correct Sidney, I may need help with Frederick his father.

David, Thank you for your info. I'm thinking the Susan Baker listed is Susan Barker. Elizabeth had a sister born at the same time 1837. The website you suggested has really helped.

On reflection I'm even less certain about that Baker 1841 census entry.
The baptism index show Elizabeth Barker christened 1823 and Susan Barker chr 1837 both daughters of James and Elizabeth Barker, which look much more promising.

In 1841 that family is:
HO107/074-01 folio 9A
Shepreth End Foulmire
James Barker 40 ag lab
Elizabeth 40; Charlotte 12; Kezia 10; Susan 7; Sarah 4; Charles 1. All born in Cambs.

I had initially discounted this Susan as being too old when looking for her in 1841, but comparing the family with the baptism index I wonder if the enumerator may have confused Susan and Sarah in the census, as the baptism index shows Sarah as being born in 1834/5 and Susan in 1837, whereas the census has them reversed. The 1851 where Susan is 14 is consistent with the baptism index.

Hello Pabird,

I realise that this is an old thread but I have just read it. Elizabeth Barker born c1823 at Fowlmere was my 2xgreat grandfather's cousin. Her parents were James Barker and Elizabeth Godfrey.

Elizabeth was baptised at the Independent Church Fowlmere July 23rd 1823. James was the son of James and Susan Barker, hence Elizabeth's younger sister named Susan. My 2xgreat grandfather's sister was also named Susan after her grandmother.

I guess this makes us 'cousins'.

Leigh
