Mary Hitchman of Wantage

So Grove was without a chapel for around a 100 years, then Grove residents must have all been married in Wantage. Possibly whether "p. W" was written or not depended on who wrote the original record, and the transcriber just copied what was written (as indeed they should)

GROVE CHURCH, WITH PARSONAGE AND ENDOWMENT.
THE Hamlet of GROVE, in the parish of Wantage, containing a population of 520, had formerly a small Chapel, attached to the Church of England ; but this Chapel having been long in a state unfit for Divine Service, Grove remained for many years destitute of a place of worship according to the Established Church. In the summer of last year a plan was entered into for building a new church, and supplying a residence and endowment for a minister. The church is built, and was consecrated on the 14th of August last, by the Bishop of Salisbury. The Parsonage House is nearly completed, and the minister is already resident. The old Chapel has been put into a state of repair, and assigned for the use of a Parish School.

Whatever, there are still two problems
1. Which Mary Hitchman married William Goddard in 1821?
2. No death certificate found for her (that one may be insurmountable!) At least there is the burial.

Possible candidates are:

Mary Higgs Hitchman b. 1795 Wantage daughter of Ann

Mary Hitchman b. 1796 daughter of William and Elizabeth

There’s also an Mary Hitchman b. 1800 Wantage daughter of Ann Hitchman maybe the same Ann who had Mary Higgs Hitchman in 1795 maybe she died ?

There may be two Anns
There's an Ann Hitchman d/o William and Sarah bapt 1771. I think she married Edmund Roberts in 1803 and was in Marlborough in 1851
And an Ann Hitchman bapt in 1775 d/o George and Hannah. She is possibly the one who married Thomas Leach in 1806.

There is an Ann Leach with a William and Mary Kent in Grove in 1841. So it looks like the William Kent Mary Hitchman couple who married in 1821,

I have tried to put family groups together unfortunately it hasn't helped.

Benjamin H who married Rachel Bond 1826 I can find no children and in 1851 it appears his mothers name is Martha. (Hickman on ancestry)
 
Richard H who married Elizabeth Boot 1821 had Mary, Sarah, William, Joseph and Robert.

For your Goddard family I cannot find that any Hitchman used Leticia or Jemima, have you tried Oxfordshire, lots of Hitchman's there. Or do you think they are from the Goddard side?

I would say that Mary Higgs Hitchman b. 1795 daughter of Ann is the one who married William Kent because her date of birth is around 1796 and Ann Leach nee Hitchman was with them on the 1841.

I think my Mary Hitchman is the one who was born 1796 in Wantage daughter of William and Elizabeth. She died 1850 age 55 but the GRO has no entry for her.

William Goddard who married Mary Hitchman in 1821 had a sister called Letty Evans I think it’s short for Leticia so the name is from the Goddard side of the family.


I also tried to join different family history societies to research my family for example Sussex,Berkshire but I don’t have PayPal or a credit card just debitcard. It’s easier to work with images transcriptions or indexes

William Goddard was born in East Hendred 1792 son of John Goddard(1747-1831) and Betty Evans(1758-1841)

I’m not from the UK so I’m not familiar with the naming pattern in the UK or traditions
